Cypher: "Besides the raising of children marriage also includes benefits in old age pensions, visiting rights, taxes and so on. Just to name a few other partly economic aspects without accepting economics to be the reason to marry."

These are the rights I said that states would take away from married couples rather than be forced to give them to homosexual couples. States might abolish civil marriage altogether. There are some countries (such as Israel) where civil marriages do not exist, only ecclesiastical ones.

I am getting new support from an unexpected quarter. President Obama, in saying he does not support the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), said that issued of marriage are traditionally left to the states!

Second, in response to something JP said:
"Because you're talking about rape. Like inside the exact definition of it. Minors can't "consent" in the eyes of the law. "

In the eyes of the law...exactly. Aren't you arguing that laws should change because some of them are inherently bigoted? Would you like to discuss what law currently says about marriage? I understand what you're trying to say, but that particular line of reasoning is not consistent.

I believe what you're actually arguing is that there is a right and wrong regarding acceptable sexual behavior, and laws should be enacted, repealed, or modified to support your beliefs.

I see what you mean, but I think the point of what I was saying was that what he was comparing to was literally rape. I said "in the eyes of the law" to emphasize it's definitive nature in being rape.

I'm not sure there's an issue with pointing out the injustice in one law while supporting others. If they compare because they both involve sexual practice, I think the clear distinction is the child rape part.

You've gotta draw the line somewhere though Thrax.

Yup, I was just pointing out that you were using an established law to make your argument - your argument that we should be changing established law. I tend to post more when I see flaws in arguments than anything else - it's why skrum's posts hurt so much, but I just can't dignify that garbage with a response. I knew what you were trying to say and glad to see your clarification.

On a different note, the latest research [citation needed; I'm lazy] shows that the jury is still out on how/when/why sexual preferences are formed. Essentially, the old nature vs nurture debate. In the case, the best hypothesis is that it's a combination, similar to alcoholism. People are predisposed to be a certain way, but their environment can affect that outcome. Vast oversimplification, but hopefully makes the point.

The line is drawn.......marriage is the union of man and woman.
