Cypher: "Besides the raising of children marriage also includes benefits in old age pensions, visiting rights, taxes and so on. Just to name a few other partly economic aspects without accepting economics to be the reason to marry."

These are the rights I said that states would take away from married couples rather than be forced to give them to homosexual couples. States might abolish civil marriage altogether. There are some countries (such as Israel) where civil marriages do not exist, only ecclesiastical ones.

I am getting new support from an unexpected quarter. President Obama, in saying he does not support the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), said that issued of marriage are traditionally left to the states!

Why didn't Obama give his quote, 24 hours before our vote? He waited until the day after... kind of bizarre?

Skrums revengeful, punishing god is a bit old testament. The new testament introducing Jesus as his son and sacrifical lamb has a forgiving god - if you believe in him and trust in him being the only saviour. But on the other hand a little backward and outdated argumentation seems to fit the scheme.

As for your question about my sentence: If males betray their women, and it can be heared quite often that they tend to do that, then they need women to do that. I don't believe in females being the "better" humans with less sexual drive. Therefor some of the betraying will be done with married women. So the husband even in marriage has no guarantee of the child being biologically his, as the wife might have had some fun with others.

To get back to the point of why homosexuals should be allowed to wed, any relationship between 2 adults that openly declare that they want to spend the rest of their lives as a unit sharing all that is to come until one of them dies should be treated equal. You could add further benefits if children appear in that relationship, but that's another issue (and of course society wants children and should foster their existance). Society also wants people to be peaceful and happy - they tend to do that in pairs. 3 is not working as one is usually a bit aside. 4 makes just 2 pairs. This can be seen for any odd or even number.

if you want to make the god argument, then divorce should be illegal also. so should sex before marriage and lot of other things.

We cannot make laws based on religious beliefes. Because religion is a matter of faith (in the eyes of most people). laws should be made based on our best understaning of the world.

the difference between homosexuality and pedophilia is that homosexuality is between two equally (more or less) mentally developed individuals that have the option not to engadge in the act. while Pedophilia is between one adult, and one person that is not developed enough to take care of its own interests. It is the worst kind of stattatoury rape.

If I persuade you thraxle to jump off a cliff, then I am not responsible for your actions. If I persuade a child, then I AM responsible for that childs actions.

Again, I'm simply comparing the arguments since the underlying point is that one is more socially acceptable than the other. That's all a law is......a socially acceptable rule (or allowance). If society one day finds it socially acceptable to fuck little kids, then I'm sure laws will be changed to allow this. I'm sure that would appall many, many people, which is the point behind my "devil's advocate" argument. Some people feel homosexuality is unnatural and disgusting; however, homosexuality is growing more and more socially acceptable, thus the laws are changing to allow this act to be bound by lawful marriage. But for those that oppose this to be called bigots is uncalled for in my eyes. People (usually) cannot help how they feel. They were likely raised by their parents to feel a certain way and that's just how it is. Just like supporters of homosexual equality claim that homosexuals cannot help how they were born, opposition of homosexuality cannot help how they were raised. Change of this type usually takes generations, not years.

How about if you were raised by parents that want to diminish the rights of black people Thrax, and they managed to instill this belief in you. Is it unfair to then call this person a racist since it was the parents that raised the kid to think like this?

And people who opposed multiracial marriage because they were raised to believe that, were they not bigots?

Also, you're using the same argument to compare two extremely different examples. We've outlined how they are different multiple times in the thread already. I like chicken, so I should buy some and eat it and I like uranium so I should buy some and eat it are the same argument. Doesnt make both true or both false.

Being born black or white is a scientific fact. Cite me the article where being homosexual is in the genes. Prove it scientifically for me. That is the difference in many people's eyes. They feel homosexuality is a learned way of life...a chosen way of life...others feel they are born that way and shouldn't be discriminated against. Pedophiles are also born that way...with a chemical imbalance that predisposes them to "unnatural tendencies" towards children. Society calls them "sick" and "disturbed" and they get prosecuted or medicated to curb their behavior. Homosexuality is socially acceptable so prosecution or medication to alleviate the behavior is not required.

Let me further my devil's advocacy. Let's say science isolates the cause of homosexuality in humans and develops a vaccine that can be distributed to children that eliminates homosexual tendency. Let's also say that this vaccine were offered by all pediatricians and covered by all medical insurances. What percentage of parents do you think would have this vaccine administered to their children?
