North Korea was just appointed chair of the U.N. Conference on Disarmament.

We need to cut funding to this organization and kick them out of NYC.

Monte: you say dead is right. Are you referring to his sentiment or what he literally suggested which was to "defund and kick out" the UN. I was referring to the latter which is extremely ignorant. If you really feel dead is right in this suggestion I think you should probably avoid any career moves into diplomacy or foreign relations.

BO if you are that quick to run to judgment based on a tiny phrase that someone says while disregarding the walls of text in which they belabor their points, then you dont have any place in diplomacy, lol.

did i ever say i wanted the UN terminated or kicked out? no. how many times did i say that it was ludicrous for north korea to be put in charge of anything? oh... umm... EVERY time.

stop putting words in my mouth. you remind me of leek.

you jumped to his aid against me, the above is why I disagreed with dead/found his sentiment ignorant. While I find this series of events ironic I don't think NK is any less qualified to head the disarmament presidency than us. Of course this wouldn't be news if it was us, would it? How many more wars have we been in since the Korean war than North Korea? Exactly. Who is the number one producer and dealer of arms? Us. I don't mean to belabor the point but you are wrong to think dead is right in any capacity other than sentiment. In which case no one is disagreement, and that is why I didn't appreciate you butting into my discussion with dead.

i agreed with dead that north korea shouldnt be the leader of an arms-reduction conference. i also immediately said that he came off as an ignorant american, and went on to say that america would have absolutely no place running that conference either. i recommended a few pacifist european nations instead.

where in that reply did you see me agreeing with him that we should kick the UN out of new york? you didnt. where did you see me saying that america was a shining beacon of holiness when it comes to arms reduction? you didnt.

stop seeing things that i never said, and stop fucking putting words in my mouth.

I am pretty sure many of you have missunderstood what it means to actually chair a confereance in the UN.

there is ZERO power in chairing it, it is an HONORARY position. almost every conferance the UN has have chairs from new nations every year. it is a way to grease the diplomatic wheels and a way to say that nations are equal.

wtf UN corrupt????
this statement is meaningless, because the UN has ZERO power. there might have been corrupt people un positions of the UN, but the UN has little to no power. if a chilean person in the UN is corrupt that means he is corrupt against the intrests for chile, and how can he be that? well, the only was is to NOT follow orders from chile.

kreuz, i came to that realization through boogy's link to the UN blog... this chairmanship is nothing powerful, so nothing to worry about. and i agree that you have to give face to every country, or else there will be several offended countries, and rightfully so.

what i mean by corruption i dont mean in a political or power situation. i mean that the UN has a rather large amount of money go through it, and there are a lot of opportunities for people within the organization to use the money for good or to line their own pockets while they use the money for good.

its the same story in most not-for-profit businesses. which is why i always research the company before i donate to it. if there are 10 companies that exist which all give food to africa, i will research all of them, find the one that does so the most efficiently, and donate to them. i.e. i will 100% of the time give to a company in which 85% of my donation actually goes to food in africa, as opposed to one where 80% of my money goes to food in africa.

in the UN case though, there are no rival companies. except seemingly in the UN blog article, it is mentioned that 3 private conferences in the past few years have attained great steps in arms reduction. so there are some alternatives to the UN in some areas, at least.

the main reason UN is ineffective is that is has no power

it is all about apparences

a friend of mine worked at a UN office in south sudan. he got spesific assignments from the norwegian amabassador to use the money coming from norway on spesific projects that had been chosen politically, and then report back how good the norwegian contribution was. he said that most of the money where thrown down the sink and/or used VERY ineffectivly. but his hands where tied. when he refused to send a report about how good it was he was fired.

he told me that almost the entire un contribution to sudan failed because of the governments that sendt them. because the governments that sends them controlls them. and almost every contribution it is more important that it looks good politically than that it is effectful. most of the "human aid" in south sudan was there to make the western nations look good.

@Monte/BO,

Just hug each other already. And let's get back on topic; which is "The UN should be kicked out of NYC and de-funded." It is an absolute abomination to allow the moral equivocation of the US with countries such as North Korea, Iran, Syria, etc.

It requires the ignorance on a level that is embarrassing. These countries are ruled by dictators that brutalize their citizens. The US may be flawed; but nothing on the level of these nations.

Listen if you want to pay for an organization to allow dictators and other monstrosities to come and propagandize then go do it on your dime.

monte also

"i will 100% of the time give to a company in which 85% of my donation actually goes to food in africa, as opposed to one where 80% of my money goes to food in africa. "

it is not the companies fault that they get bad % often. usually it is the local governments fault. they will say "if you want to give out food in this country, you have to buy it from this country too, otherwise you will destroy the economy" and then they will give a 5%-80% loss exchange rate

kreuz: really appreciate your story about your friend. it sucks that so much of the time when you want to do something good with your money, there are always people who want to take advantage of you, whether politically or financially. tell your friend that i appreciate his integrity. sucks that he got fired, but good for him for staying honest.
