The Test Server Rocks

Hey guys,

I probably will not be playing the main servers this month. Why not? Well, I'm having entirely too much fun playing the test servers! The scoring is quite different, and some stuff is changed, but it's still very true to the spirit of kdice.

Test server is here:

Things you should know:

- Scoring is very different. Each turn you pay 2 points to continue playing the game. These points go into a common pot. Actually, 2 pots, one for placement and one for DOM. When you leave the game, you withdraw however many points you earned from each pot. If the number of points you put in was lower, you earn a positive score; if you put in more points than you take out, it's a negative score.

- 1 share of DOM is earned for each land you own at the start of your turn

- The first place player gets 6 shares of the placement pot. Second gets 5 shares, and so on. 7th gets zero shares.

- Flagging has been changed to resigning. You can resign the game at any time after round 3. You instantly die, and all your lands turn grey (neutral) and stop accumulating dice. That means no flag whining, no dom raping, and no ninjas.

- It's generally wise to resign when you are certain you cannot get a higher place by sitting in, because you are spending points every turn to remain in the game.

uhh ye, any developer knows that functionality/form is the key
many people have asked for some kind of colour changes, it's something that affects a number of people, not just me, so to say (and it doesnt affect me actually)
ryan's doing fine, but why ask for feedback if you won't use it??

my biggest beef with the new gpokr-esque games: heroism gets penalized. some of my favorite games of old were the ones where i could come back from say 11 territories to beat an 18-territory monster. most would used to say, "monte, you need to flag," and i would say, "nah, not until i have absolutely no chance. i still have a 5% chance of getting lucky." and 5% of the time, i would get crazy lucky, and come back for the win. anyways, it seems this is near impossible now, what with the ante every turn.

(REMINDER: I STILL LIKE THE NEW GPOKR-LIKE kDICE BETTER).

the other thing i see is less trucing. people are too concerned with beating others out, and too concerned with flagging for positive points. so when it gets down to 3 people on a table, and it used to be that 2 and 3 would truce and try to beat 1... it just doesnt happen that often any more. 2 and 3 are more concerned about placing higher than each other, and 3 doesnt really care about trucing at all. because if he joins the truce against #1, then it takes a long time for the tide to turn (and he is losing points each turn), and in the end he only moves from 3rd to 2nd in place, which doesnt make up for all the points he has been anteing during the truce. so the only reason 3rd has for trucing is for heroism/feeling good. because theres no way hes getting any more points than what he would get by just flagging. if anything, he wants to try to get lucky aiming against #2, to steal that place.

(NOTE: I STILL LIKE THE NEWER VERSION BETTER)

one of my favorite new wrinkles is the strategy of being #1. as cody has pointed out to me innumerous times, the way to play the new system is to stay #1 for as long as possible. and keep people from flagging early. which means dont play overly aggressive. if you take too many lands and secure the game too early, everyone sees this, and then the flags start pouring in, and you get 1st with +14 rhombi. if you slow play it and fool people into thinking you arent that strong, or arent that smart (easy to do if your name is wishbone), then you get more rounds where you are 'collecting the antes'. and eventually, slowly, everyone realizes you have them dominated with 11 territories and +32, and then the flags start coming in, and you get 1st with +30 rhombi. but it is a precarious strategy. when you realize you have the game in hand, you have two choices: take it immediately and guarantee the +14, or try to slow play it (which is agonizing, especially when there are smart people at the table with you), and possibly get +30, but equally possibly get +4 or so, when someone announces what you are doing in the chatbox and everyone then gangbangs you before you can truly solidify the game.

anyways, it is quite fun. if you havent tried the new game yet, give it a try. there is no mass cheating over there. its a group of people that are beta-testing. and no one is causing others to flag all the time, at least i havent seen this at all. so try it out, comment what you think. this is YOUR game that YOU get to help develop... at least until leek discovers that you are osama bin laden himself.
