The Test Server Rocks

Hey guys,

I probably will not be playing the main servers this month. Why not? Well, I'm having entirely too much fun playing the test servers! The scoring is quite different, and some stuff is changed, but it's still very true to the spirit of kdice.

Test server is here:

http://test.gpokr.com:8081/kdice/

Things you should know:

- Scoring is very different. Each turn you pay 2 points to continue playing the game. These points go into a common pot. Actually, 2 pots, one for placement and one for DOM. When you leave the game, you withdraw however many points you earned from each pot. If the number of points you put in was lower, you earn a positive score; if you put in more points than you take out, it's a negative score.

- 1 share of DOM is earned for each land you own at the start of your turn

- The first place player gets 6 shares of the placement pot. Second gets 5 shares, and so on. 7th gets zero shares.

- Flagging has been changed to resigning. You can resign the game at any time after round 3. You instantly die, and all your lands turn grey (neutral) and stop accumulating dice. That means no flag whining, no dom raping, and no ninjas.

- It's generally wise to resign when you are certain you cannot get a higher place by sitting in, because you are spending points every turn to remain in the game.

monte, you are right, it is as you say, but these changes are the very think, I like so much about the new kdice.
I think the new system rewards skill more than the old one did. Luck is still a factor, but not as much anymore as it used to be. That's just the feeling I got. Especially when seeing the same players finishing top3 almost every game, just by following some main rules of strategy.

The game also cuts of trucing a lot. There is still some going on, but usually you dont benefit from it as much as in the old kdice. Which is nice, because now, truces are very tactical, in a way. You can't just pga or truce with friends, for it often costs you more than it benefits you.

It is true tho, that 1st will - if he knows how to play - try to sustain the game in order to drain points from 2nd and 3rd. This is a little bit unbalanced and gives the game a new character, maybe some minor adjustments to the scoring could reduce this problem, which however, I don't find to be that grave. There are still so many games, where there is no clear 1st dominating the whole game. More often than not, there will be a dominating player not until the late phase of the game. But also I have seen a lot of very long games with pretty equal players.

The best thing about the new kdice though, is the community right now. There are so few people playing most of the time, that there is only one table filled. So you get to know the others, it's a very friendly athmosphere, mostly. It's fun to play with the same people over and over again. That's much more competition than playing with strangers all the time :D

Ryan, you did a great job with this new game. I wish there were some more players, so you don't have to wait that long for a table to fill up. Like 20-30 more people would suffice.

Anyways, check it out and form your own opinion. Most people I've met love the new kdice, besides the inevitable fact that it isn't perfect yet and still has some bugs. But this is still a beta and I would not expect anything other.

Let's bring both sides of the Alpha Server. I am personally tired of seeing 1 side of the argument. All we see in these posts is I like this and I like that..

Ryan set it up for feedback so let's bring some feedback/bugs/what should be changed. I've heard lots of users express dislike for the new system for many reasons

Otherwise, this isn't much of a community and why should we bother playing the new game if our opinions don't count?

Well, we still need more players, or we aren't going to get many opinions.... it's still way too hard to get a game over there. Just looked and there is 1 person sitting at 1 table (and no active games). Eventually it will fill up.

I like it, mostly, even though it feels like you have to crawl up or down on the points scale. I suppose that once people graduate to the higher tables, scores will increase/decrease faster.

Ryan, have a look at the table list please, it's totally messed up. 201 ppl playing on a table and stuff like that. It is really annoying, since you don't know anymore, how many ppl are sittin at a table. So you have to take a look at every table to find one where ppl play.

you know what an amazing addition to the game would be?
if a table is sitting at 5/7 or 6/7 for a certain amount of time (say 5-10 minutes), start the game with the extra players as neutral stacks.

Yes. Yes it does. I hope more people move over so we can play more often, and I hope that with next month's reset comes a switch of the main system over to this one.
