at 2:04 PM, Tuesday July 17, 2007 EDT Thanks for the advice XCRobin. Gpokr however proves to be a good model to follow. You have to remember its all relative. When lower players see higher players have their score reset it makes getting to first place seem more possible. The start of the month at Gpokr is fun since everyone is in 1st. GPokr would have the same elistist problem if chips were kept from month to month. And believe me some people were upset about the first reset last year but its much more positive than negative.

at 2:56 PM, Tuesday July 17, 2007 EDT Yes, Ryan I agree that a single elo reset does have it’s advantages. The main point of that post was explaining how a frequent elo reset would do more harm than good. I generalized too much in my final sentence of that post, but I’m glad that you recognize the problems that the elo reset would pose.
Another question I pose, is that if there is an elo reset, which there will be at some point, are you at all afraid of the newer players pga’ing to get them up to the top table? After all of the talk in the past two months openly in the forums, resetting everything will give a greater incentive for new players to pga, either openly or secretively. How do you plan on stopping that? (I’m trying to pose a serious question, not be a jerk) |

at 3:08 PM, Tuesday July 17, 2007 EDT A monthly ELO reset is a good idea. I thought there should have been one from the start. If people are supposed to be ranked by their performance each month, there's no real reason why their rating in, say, July, should have any bearing on their rating in August.
It's more fair, more accurate, and - I think - more fun. I guess this thread is about team play, though. I did play in one 'team' game, and I thought it was fun. There was more of a strategy element to it that made it a bit more exciting, as after you've played a few thousand games of regular kdice, there aren't too many situations where you're not sure what the right move is. Unfortunately, as Ryan said, it doesn't really mix well with the system as it is now, and I don't think trying to force it would work out all that well in the long run. I do think though, Ryan, that Cody's idea of the "team" tab is a decent one, if you had the time or willingness to implement it. I don't think most players would really even care about keeping track of scores for such team games, it's just that it would be a nice change of pace from the 'regular' game. Hey, maybe a legitimized team version would even cut down on PGAs in single player (which are present at all tables, not just the 2000+). I know any time I've linked friends to the game they want to play as my 'partner', and I've encountered some pretty obvious PGAs (effectively, "teams") at all the table ratings. |

at 7:56 PM, Tuesday July 17, 2007 EDT resetting elo monthly would effectively remove elo rated tables from the equation.. it takes months for the system as it is now to move from 1500 to 2000.
it seems you either have no rating on tables, which wouldn't necessarily be bad.. keep the system fundamentally the same as it is now.. or you speed up the pace at which the new elo rated tables are created.. which would increase 'elitism' tenfold. i'm not quite sure what would have the impact you are looking for. anyway, its your game to do what you want with; it will be interesting to see how everything turns out. oh. and since the movie quotes are going over so well; here's another of my favorites (from "The Devil's Advocate"): -------- Kevin Lomax: What do you want from me? John Milton: I want you to be yourself. Y'know, boy, guilt is like a bag of fucking bricks. All you gotta do is set it down.....Who are you carrying all those bricks for anyway? God? Is that it? God? Well, I'll tell ya, lemme give you a little inside information about God. God likes to watch. He's a prankster. Think about it. He gives man instincts! He gives this extraordinary gift and then--what does he do? I swear--for his own amusement--his own private cosmic gag reel--he sets the rules in opposition. It's the goof of all time! Look. But don't touch! Touch. But don't taste! Taste. Don't swallow! [laughs] And while you're jumping from one foot to the next, he's laughing his sick fucking ass off!! He's a tight ass, he's a sadist, he's an absentee landlord!! Worship that never! |

at 8:14 PM, Tuesday July 17, 2007 EDT Well i dont mind monthly elo restart, but id still think that "Team" idea is a very good suggestion.
A lot of players (not just high elo and 2000s) would like 2 play it. I do understand that it is a lot of job and quite hard 2 do, but i think it be worth it and more ppl would come (that means more donations and etc) |

at 8:36 PM, Tuesday July 17, 2007 EDT I'm a big fan of an ELO reset. I find it gets more boring when you basically reach a level and you're capable of spiking between top elo and mid range 2150ish and stay there all month and then just try to brute force your way into the top 10 by going on a decent run and playing consistently good. An elo reset helps set everyone at the same starting point making far more competitive especially for newer players that get caught in the 1700 quagmire.
Ryan, I really respect the work you've put into the game and the time and effort you've spent to give us such a great medium. However, while I respect your ability to guide the game in the direction you see fit, it seems that looking at how this team situation can be more of a positive experience then a way that people are "manipulating the game." Team play is such an interesting twist on a really good game and would really be nice if you gave it a try sometime... |

at 10:05 PM, Tuesday July 17, 2007 EDT mm I think it is time for us to stop harassing Ryan. I know i have no ground to stand on, but I feel i was wrong to bring the team issue into such a position. We do not need to argue over the unimportant issue of whether Ryan WANTS to do teams, all we need to know is that he CAN'T. Ryan is entering a very busy few months in his own life, and I apologize for increasing the work load he had to go through. My final words on the matter are that we should respect Ryan's decision on his own involvement in the issue, and that if you want to risk the consequences of playing team games, that is your prerogative, just please take a a couple months off of bugging Ryan over the issue. Perhaps in late September or October we can revisit the idea of official team play, perhaps the resets will make things so you don't want to...who knows?
-CoMik- P.S. Can I be unmuted now :p |
