Cypher: "Besides the raising of children marriage also includes benefits in old age pensions, visiting rights, taxes and so on. Just to name a few other partly economic aspects without accepting economics to be the reason to marry."

These are the rights I said that states would take away from married couples rather than be forced to give them to homosexual couples. States might abolish civil marriage altogether. There are some countries (such as Israel) where civil marriages do not exist, only ecclesiastical ones.

I am getting new support from an unexpected quarter. President Obama, in saying he does not support the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), said that issued of marriage are traditionally left to the states!

The economic function of marriage is to ensure that any prospective child that the father will help bring up is his. No fatherhood, no need for marriage. Same sex couples need not apply.

Are you not aware of the economic or social benefits that derive from adoption? Adoption by a straight couple or a gay couple allow these to happen. Should not matter that there are 2 fathers or 2 mothers. You realize that the alternative is state funded (tax payers) foster care or taxpayer funded prisons right?

das:

You have said that singles can adopt. So why take the extra step of marriage? Two singles can adopt. Three singles, etc. The greater ratio of adults to children the more economically secure the household is. So where does the marriage come in?

Why are people born a certain way denied certain rights just because of how they are born?

This whole adoption thing is a total distraction from this key question.

The percentage of cuckoo-children would be nice to know. A father can't be sure that it is genetically his child, marriage or not. In order to permanently betray their wifes, which males are supposed to do, they do need females...

If this society wants people to live in couples and give each other shelter and warmth and something to love to see again and society wants an institution for it, marriage has to be open for homosexuals as well. Else any marriage that does not result in children has to be treated as not valid. This can be the case until children arrive or after they turn 21 (or whatever age you like to choose).

The potential of having children does not help anything. Else donating sperm could be sufficient - or having the ability to donate sperm...

Some people are born with a disposition to enjoy fucking little children. Should we deny them that right?
