Cypher: "Besides the raising of children marriage also includes benefits in old age pensions, visiting rights, taxes and so on. Just to name a few other partly economic aspects without accepting economics to be the reason to marry."

These are the rights I said that states would take away from married couples rather than be forced to give them to homosexual couples. States might abolish civil marriage altogether. There are some countries (such as Israel) where civil marriages do not exist, only ecclesiastical ones.

I am getting new support from an unexpected quarter. President Obama, in saying he does not support the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), said that issued of marriage are traditionally left to the states!

In Belgium (and I think many European countries), you have an official wedding (conducted in the presence of the mayor or his deputee) and a ceremonial wedding (in a church or whatever your religion's customs are).

Only the official marriage certificate has legal implications. Homosexual couples can sign such a legal wedding contract and that's how it should be.

So homosexual people have the same rights as heterosexual people. "Marriage" is not copyrighted by religions. If most religions chose to be narrow minded and impose retarded restrictions, that's their right but luckily we are living in a nation that separates state and religion so homosexual couples aren't denied of their fundamental right to make their relationship official if they want to.

one of the reasons this is such a hot topic is that most people who are highly opinionated on the matter believe that the other people are wrong and therefore "retarded". sigh.

In addition, marriage is not a christian invention. To make it even worse, marriage can occur between adults. For the christian church you become a full member after confirmation/communion. So you can marry (from the church's posision) at the age of 14 (usually). Federal law does not allow this in most countries, in some however, it is done. These are under surveillance of human rights guards...

Come again, marriage makes it legal and thus homosexuals are illegal?

Already did - you ignored it.

Have you read Skrum's posts in this thread?

I don't think you're retarded!

Just sometimes you argue retarded things for the sake of arguing ;-)

true...gets it to 100 faster

I don't believe most of the things I posted, and I don't believe homosexuals should be stopped from getting married, but I do think they'll isolate the "cause" of homosexuality one day and the option will be there to eliminate that urge. It is unnatural if for no other reason than the need for a species to procreate. Most people are scared of things that are A) new, and B) unusual. That's why all change is difficult. But you already know that.

das:

You have said that singles can adopt. So why take the extra step of marriage? Two singles can adopt. Three singles, etc. The greater ratio of adults to children the more economically secure the household is. So where does the marriage come in?
