Question on deals, flags, and 1 / 3 deals

I have a question on somewhat of an unorthodox deal that took place. I'd like people's opinion on what happened and if it was fair or not.

A game I was participating in was down to the final 3 people: me, purple, and brown. I've already flagged to purple, and it's looking like brown is going to get 3rd, as purple is much larger than him. Brown declares he's going 1 / 3 with purple (which I take it means he's fighting for 1st and if he loses he'll take 3rd)

Brown makes a couple of clever attacks, has some great restacks, and suddenly it's looking maybe 50/50 on who gets 1st, purple or brown. So I ask purple, "Hey, can I rescind my flag? If so, I'll attack brown with you and you'll at least get 2nd." Purple says OK, and that's how it goes down: Brown gets 3rd due to my coming into the fight, Purple gets 2nd, I get 1st.

My question: is that an ethical deal? Brown was (understandably) pretty upset, but I never had an agreement with him. Just curious what the communities take is on something like this.

Thanks!

Yeah I definitely agree with your assessment of the OPs scenario. I just disagree about thinking of things as ethical vs unethical.

I consider myself an ethical person; but I shoot random people in grand theft auto, lie my ass off in poker, and occasionally stab people in KDice (when they deserve it; albeit).

I just separate the games from the real life. Games are meant to allow you to experience things that you would never experience in real life. Sometimes; you play the role of a villain and sometimes as a hero; but I do not believe that that reflects who you are as a person out side of the game; which is where ethics comes into play. Real people in real lives.

i dont mean to call out yodel specifically, hes just a good recent example. there were def times in khistory where stabbing me was a +EV decision. so tilting to be stabbed, and then instead of the other opponents/gallery rushing to your defense to call out the stabber, they heap praises on him and heap LOLs on you. heh.

Yeah I definitely agree with your 1) and 2). And there are many more plausible advantages to not being completely honest.

However there are also similar effects that take place when you play completely honest and trusting while being ruthless in response to attacks.

People will reward you for playing honest and I find it commonly.

My style of game play is always to reward favorable game play moves towards me and punish unfavorable ones. However I'm always willing to stick my neck on the line for someone who is not a known quantity.

The outcome I want to instill in peoples minds is that I'm either your best ally or tedious and effective hurdle to your win.

I created the player notes; for this purpose. My style of play is ineffective if I cannot remember people with perfect accuracy.

No, this is the way it works:

teal: monte, i flag for 2nd
monte: is that a flag TO ME?
teal: no worries, i flag 2nd
monte: IS THAT FLAG EXPLICITLY TO ME, SUCH THAT YOU WILL REFLAG UNDER ME IF I START TO DIE?
monte: ANSWER ME BEFORE MY TURN OR I WILL DESTROY YOU, AND THEN FLAG 2ND WILLINGLY TO WHOMEVER WANTS 1ST.
teal: sorry, that's all you get.
monte: ITS MY FUCKING LIFE. DO YOU FLAG >>TO ME<< OR NOT????
teal: no.
monte: ok, cheers, gl with 2nd :)

skrum, i think youre limited view of me is nice monte. i have yet to threaten you in a game (mostly because i havent had need to yet, you play a pretty logical game, and in my experience you are never a dirty player).

BUT

if you ever try to flag for placement while i have huge stacks pointed your way, and you refuse to clarify that the flag is TO ME, i guarantee that my ego is so large that i would find more pleasure in destroying you into 3rd or 4th (even if it meant i would go from 1st to 2nd, or 3rd, or 4th, or 7th), than to find more guaranteed points by letting you sit for 2nd while i risk a slight battle for probable first.

really, since early 2008 when i got my gold, i have had little regard for points, whereas an insanely high regard for ego. (i.e. i dont want anybody to ever believe that they have taken advantage of me)

hope that makes sense about how nonsensical i can be.

Brown should just have said: I go 1-3, your second place is secured. You flagged to purple, right, but you don't have to save his life if he is losing.

Or you should just have said no to the 1-3, although that's kinda dicky.

I was genuinely calling you out for being a pompous ass.
