Obama clearly lied to Democrat voters about his intentions of repealing the Patriot Act.

Meet the new boss; same as the old boss.

@BO, how can you support someone with an obvious lack of integrity? A few days back you praised the Libertarians for standing against the Patriot Act's renewal. Obama could have killed the Patriot Act with his veto; what's the deal?

Maybe it's time you came over to the good side.

no, no, I have loved ron paul for the last few years, the thing I am personally thinking is the following, I am an anti-autotharian first, then left second. I feel that I would rather ally with a rightwing libretarian, rather than a left wing autotharian.

however I do believe that in the end, to believe in the free marked as much as you do does not work, I believe that what the marked wants is not neccesarily what is good for the public good. I believe that there is certain things that the free marked does better, but the things I believe the government should do is more than you do dead.

this is my opinions:
I cincerly believe in democracy, and there can be no real democracy unless the public that votes also have other means of getting their oppinion through. just the people screaming "NO TARP!" isnt democracy, democracy is those people also being heard, also being able to pur forward their posistion. also being part of the debate. HOWEVER I believe the "masses" is unable to do that in a meaning full way if their main needs are not taken care of. I believe that a hungry human is a stupid human. I believe that an un educated human is too easily swayed by charisma. I believe that too stupid peaple should not be alowed to interfer with my life (I support a repbulic, rule of law). I think we for the most parts agree deadcode, however, I believe that being desperate makes you stupid, I believe that democracy is best when we have a strong middle class, and almost no underclass. I believe we can afford, and its good foor us, to take the hit in economy, to make the middle class better. I believe that the society that today provides the best education for THE LOWEST PRIZE will be the society that prospers in 50 years.

An there is America's BIG problem, the massive underclass that has grown in rural america as a result of this last economic downturn: the simple that are easily swayed with a few strong words said in front of the American flag. They have had their place of employment, usually a rural plant of companies like Alcoa, Anadarko, etc., close its doors permanently or downsize massively, but since agriculture simply isnt the business it used to be, the rural citizen has nowhere else to turn. They start taking on 2 or 3 parttime jobs for survival, because their highschool education has NOT prepared them for success in life. The area highschools could not arm them with the tools necessary for success.

As a highschool teacher, I see their numbers grow larger by the day. I'm not sure how to transform rural highschools from lower class grunt worker factories into middle class citizens who are educated enough and skilled enough to still be productive and still have a job when an economic crisis comes along, however, I can tell you that No Child Left Behind has proven it is not the answer. NCLB only squanders the great minds and barely does anything to the lower scoring children who usually cant see the value in education because their parents have been drawing unemployment ever since the plant left town. There has to be a way to make our lower class more skilled.

Maybe more emphasis on Vocational training? Maybe by tracking the kids based on their interests? Maybe the govt could step in and tie entitlements to educational achievement (other than attendance)?

All I know, is something has to be done if the American people want a voice.

you guys try and act all high and liberal and mighty, as if you are championing for the rights of Americans. i do agree with deadcode that Obama has shown an absolute lack of integrity (and mentioned it in my Obama post), but seriously what gives? the patriot act is intended solely to stop terrorists. not only are many of these people not american citizens, but they are involving themselves in plots to kill massive amounts of Americans. sometimes the government has to take certain measures to protect the rights and life of those of us who actually take pride in our country and contribute to its well-being.

what the fuck is it about the Patriot Act that you all bitch about? in what way does it affect the rights of people who don't plot terrorist acts?

When I asked my dad why he left the Soviet Union he gave me a pretty honest answer. He told me they watched everything you did, they policed everyone and censored everything. It was a police state in its utmost form. "I left because I wanted something better for children," he said. Pretty cliche answer for an immigrant I guess.

When all this patriot Act and TSA started happening I was still a kid but I asked my dad for some perspective, after all he spent the better part of his life in the eastern bloc. He gave me a pretty honest answer. He said what's happening in this country is what happened in Poland in the 1950s. He said this is what he was running from, a police state. A state where you are always under surveillance, or could be, a state where the government was more interested in its self preservation that the interests or living standards of its people.

This bit always stuck with me - he said in the USSR your favorite color was red. It didn't matter if you liked blue, in public your favorite color was red. If you started saying you like other colors, like orange or green you might get arrested. So in a lot of ways you lived a double identity. Outside your favorite color was red, inside your favorite color was blue.

I don't think the issue is whether or not muslim militants, guilty or not, are good enough for our justice system. I think the issue is whether or not we want to maintain what differentiated us from the authoritarian regimes of decades past.

The question is whether you believe the Patriot Act would have stopped 9-11 from happening if it was in existence prior to then. Maybe it would have...maybe not. All I know is that nothing major has happened on American soil due to terrorism since 9-11. I don't feel like I'm in a police state and I don't feel like I'm under constant surveillance. I definitely believe that the government could fuck with me if they wanted to, but if I keep my nose clean they have no reason to and therefore don't.

I have no problem with the Patriot Act as long as it keeps us safe and as long as the powers don't go as far as what BO has mentioned about Russia numerous times. I'm more than happy to give up a minimal amount of my privacy if it keeps tragedies like 9-11 from happening.
