at 1:30 PM, Friday October 9, 2009 EDT You guys do realize that the Nobel committee is Norwegian, right? Stop making everything about the US. I don't consider myself qualified to argue whether or not Obama deserved the Nobel Peace Prize, so I'm not going into that.
But here's a thought, one of cause and effect: Do many left wing politicians get the Nobel Peace Prize because the committee is biased? Or is it maybe that left wing politicians are simply more active in peaceful issues and resolving conflicts. |

Obama was nominated two weeks into his presidency. I'm curious what concrete actions he took up to that point to warrant him beating the other hundreds of nominees? There are people who have been working tirelessly all their lives, particularly in Asia and Africa, that I think are more deserving of the award, and that actually meet the criteria. Mother Teresa, he is not. (But to be fair, who is?) Maybe that will change with time, but the awards, per their creator, are specifically for past actions, not potential future ones. (All that aside, GO USA!) |

at 3:35 PM, Friday October 9, 2009 EDT I lean pretty left on most issues but I do think this is kinda silly. That said Obama getting elected, immediatley changed the worlds view of the US. I would like to see the award go to someone that is on the ground making a difference myself but I could think of worse travesties then Obama getting the award for simply being someone that shifted the worlds view of the only Superpower from a unilateral bully to a Superpower that wants to listen to other countries ideas and interests and help bring people together. Fair or not that is the opposite of the tenor created by W.
Fuck though Yasar Arrafat won the damn thing, didn't he, the peace prize has been kind of a joke for a while in many peoples eyes for a long time. So tweaks their own. |

AND: That really surprised me: MadHat_Sam: I lean pretty left. And that also means that you probably won't get another + from Thrax.... |

The Nobel Committee said it decided to honor Obama for his "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Nobel committee recognized Obama's efforts to solve complex global problems including working toward a world free of nuclear weapons. "Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said. |

- Two weeks into his Presidency he had done enough of this to be more worthy of the award than all the other nominees? Seriously? "Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future..." "Captured attention" and "given hope" are both things that may have implications down the road, but again, the Nobel Prize is specifically about concrete actions in the previous year. If you really think that his "giving hope" made him the MOST deserving person last year, out of the hundreds nominated, you need to get out more. Truly, the only people that think he should have won over everyone else are the die-hard he-can-do-no-wrong folks. I dislike partisans on all sides, personally. (Again, go USA!) |
