Thoughts on a domless month

So tournies will definitely no have dom. The games play fine. But should this be something to consider for regular tables?
Is dom now irrelevent? A big negative of dom score is that it makes things really complicated. Another is that it doesn't reward well for comebacks. So, if there's not a compelling reason for it i think we should consider getting rid of it? Maybe just for a month to test it? The reason I think it's become less relevant is because of flagging for position. Dom was a tool to give less reward to players who "turtle" and get second. It would largely work because leading players won't attack non-aggresive players. But now, when other players flag they'll put their focus on the turtlers and there is much less chance they'll get a high position. So in effect, flagging for position makes the turtle strategy less effective, and that makes dom a little irrelevent. So what are you're thoughts? |

at 3:11 PM, Thursday October 23, 2008 EDT its been so long, that i forget what it was like without dom. i would strongly suggest a testing month, whether on test server or on the main server. i believe stronger RC code would inhibit the 1-land-protection-for-pga-to-get-better-placement schemes. but we need to test this.
tbh, i recommend that you ask some of the top players their thoughts of the weaknesses of the RC (e.g. how the hell nex/murti dont get RCd every month blows my mind). if you can get the help of a few who know how to manipulate the system (cody is always very sharp when it comes to finding loopholes... NOT abusing them, just finding them...), then i believe you can more effectively tweak the RC calc, and kdice would be a better place? anyways, i still think todays system is better than anything in the past. great job with all the improvements over the years dude. |

at 3:24 PM, Thursday October 23, 2008 EDT I agree with Lager...
(1) KEEP DOM!!! (2) And change it back to the OLD DOM SYSTEM. The losses one experiences after a wrecked start are really horrbile and violate the principle of fairness. People still keep complaining about that. Please change it back. Also: Comebacks are a very rare thing to happen. It's true that the dom system doesn't really reward comebacks but on the other hand: comebacks don't happen that often. Don't forget the best thing about the dom idea (what thraxle already kind of mentioned): Even when a player gets 2v1d or 3v1d (which IS unfair), he still has the dom he earned... |

at 1:58 PM, Friday October 24, 2008 EDT Why not eliminate points all together. Winners increase in ranking based on the ranking of the players they beat. This will reduce the benefits to people who pick up all there points by playing during certain times of the day when the competition is less steep.

at 6:29 PM, Friday October 24, 2008 EDT The core issue would come back - people would make deals, hide behind each other, and the little guy in the corner could take 2nd as long as he got the guy in 1st to go along. As you've stated Ryan, dom removes the incentive to sit in a corner with 1-2 spaces.
Quite frankly, I'd expect this to happen in tournaments as well. People who know each other will team up and give each other higher places, even if one of them is a single space hiding behind the leader. |
