Thoughts on new kdice

Lets discuss the new kdice version.
I'll try to get it out for Jan 1 with some changes: - the look will be closer to the current kdice. - the chat box will be put back to normal. I'm hoping to leave the flagging change in since it helps solve the problem with the last player not wanting to flag (this happens because last knows that others can flag for last and waits for that). The flagging is more like the old flagging but without the ninja flag problem. The strategy with the new flagging is that you can flag to single to a stronger player that you're not a threat. You're flagged at your current position, for example 2nd, and you can't place better. You'll be automatically knocked out when in this case there are only 2 players left. This also means the player in 3rd knows that you can't flag for third and will more likely opt to flag. Consequently, the player in first will attack 3rd knowing that 2nd isn't a threat. And since point farming is gone there is no motivation to attack second. Thoughts? |

at 5:50 PM, Wednesday December 19, 2007 EST OK, if you flag for a certain place, is there any indication or will there be a method to determining your score? Or will it be a crapshoot as far as it being worth while?
I agree a little bit with integral as far as the whining about "don't attack me, I'm flagged" stuff, but that won't hold in most games. To me, it's not a bad idea to be able to flag for your current place, but it seems VERY tricky and confusing still. Also, not that it really has anything to do with it (maybe it will) but is it possible to somehow reward players who are fighting for a stable position for the whole game amongst the overall battle and succeed? Not that it's a big concern of mine, but some games I've worked hard to out maneuver other players while I'm in fourth of fifth and some how I end up in second or third, but for my efforts I get negative points through Dom. or a meager amount. I'm sure there's no way you could really coordinate a system to allow for a skilled or technical player to get his just desserts; just a thought. |

at 6:13 PM, Wednesday December 19, 2007 EST Am I supposed to be able to access the test server right now? Because I'm on it.
Anyway, the new dom system is really great, but I haven't had much of any experience with new flagging since whenever I played it was with the dumb bots. |

at 6:20 PM, Wednesday December 19, 2007 EST JDizzle: People who have flagged will have a flag by their name, like the old version, and will also have a place next to the flag so you know what they've flagged for. It's possible for two people to have flagged for a position... this doesn't mean they get that position it just means they can't get anything higher. The clearest/simplest way to indicate that you can't get anything higher than a position is to show a flag with your max position.
We played with this feature on the test server and for a while live on dec 1. Also, in the case you mentioned with the bad DOM, it will be better in the next version due to the anti farming thing. Actually its not anti farming, its just a simplification of DOM, closer to the old way where the dom leader maxes out quickly (dom isn't added round after round which means you can have longer games without worrying about farming). |

at 6:32 PM, Wednesday December 19, 2007 EST Replays with chat included on higher tables would help eliminate the rumors of pgas.
It might be server intensive, so I'm not hoping for much. Maybe the option to log games can be done on the user end, so individuals can host their own records or accomplishments? |

at 6:51 PM, Wednesday December 19, 2007 EST Some idea on the social aspect of the game, altough many people have never heard of that aspect.
Could't you install a feature that would allow players to exchange a private message via, lets say Email (without publishing the adress of course)? It would be a great way to get to know players better without having to post your adress in the chatbox while all the freaks are out. A private message system on your profile would of course be even better. Just a tought. PS: LES I NEED THAT DVD!! |

at 7:29 PM, Wednesday December 19, 2007 EST Maybe I should clarify my position. At present the game is dominated by the 1/2 truce, and people feeling they are "entitled" to positions 1-4. Also trucing early and often.
The PGA isn't a very useful tool, essentially you end up worrying most games about helping out your PGA or trying not to cut/take spots your PGA wanted. If there's more than 2 it really gets sticky, unless you're all on opposite ends of the map. I've found the ultimate strategies are in fact the 1-2 truce, the early and often unspoken truce with your neighbor and "whining for higher placement". All these strategies work even better if you're playing with people you know, and work against those that aren't in the "regular players club". Why bother with a pga when you can just unspoken truce the guy beside you and both get strong together? I think, by introducing this flagging method, you're strengthening these strategies which really don't need to be any more dominant than they already are. I mean if you can explain to me how I'm wrong then that'd be great, since I haven't actually seen any games with it. |
