Apparently kdice isn't a social game according to Brubaker, this just makes me think about what makes a great kdice player. I'd say more then 60% of their skill is in mastery of the social aspects of the game. other thoughts?

*Brubaker*: matt - you are taking a leaf from the 'best' players
bcmatteagles: what leaf is that
ThunderLizard: im in a learning mode
*Brubaker*: the 'best' players conned, conived and slimed their way to the top - that last game was a perfect example
bcmatteagles: brubaker you are a fool, the game is a social game
*Brubaker*: PLAY your OWN fucking GAME.
bcmatteagles: it involves turning players against each other and making truces
DRUNKYMASTER has left
bcmatteagles: if yo uthink otherwise go play dicewars
*Brubaker*: ah, I see
*Brubaker*: well, I disagree.
beepa: anyway, didnt want to be a "brainy" (?)
bcmatteagles: you disagree that it's a social game?
*Brubaker*: I think you can be good at this without the need for deception.
bcmatteagles: the whole thing is social the whole thing is deciding who attacks who and why
*Brubaker*: well now you've got a reason to attack me. tata.
bcmatteagles: that is why you will be mediocre at best and less then average most likely
*Brubaker*: 'mediocre.'
bcmatteagles: at best
*Brubaker*: mate I win games by tactical know-how
*Brubaker*: something you 'people' lost a long time ago
*Brubaker*: game tactics
*Brubaker*: not lame-ass politics
bcmatteagles: the truly great players like rnd, grun understand that it takes a combination of tactical expertise and social expertise
*Brubaker*: 'social expertise'
*Brubaker*: explain that to me.
Malcolm2K has left
Divercesc has left
bcmatteagles: manipulating people to your favor and understanding when and how you can trust other players
*Brubaker*: set up a table with 6 robot players, and 2 'great' players - see who wins.
ThunderLizard: not too bad for killing myself
bcmatteagles: the game doesnt have robots, it's people
bcmatteagles: it's a social game

...

*Brubaker*: no - the point is to play your own game and take pride in it - win, lose or draw.
TommyR has left
bcmatteagles: well i play to win
bcmatteagles: because it's a game in which you try to out play and outwit opponents
bcmatteagles: in order to win
*Brubaker*: outwit yes, cheat, canive and twist, no.
bcmatteagles: what do you mean cheat?
*Brubaker*: that is exactly why chess players are not allowed to speak to each other.
Al G has left
tberkowsky: pink, want a truce?
bcmatteagles: is this game chess?
bcmatteagles: this is a social game
*Brubaker*: if this little box was removed, the top 50 would cease to be.
bcmatteagles: exactly, because it is social game - nitwit
*Brubaker*: you would see the truly 'great' players
bcmatteagles: you just proved my point
bcmatteagles: the fact is the box DOES exist

Dicewars, the game KDice is based on, is no grand embodiment of strategy. At best, the game itself is on par with other games of luck -- tic-tac-toe & go fish. Hart put it best yesterday, when she said her strategy was "to stay alive, and kill the others." Sure, there are some board tactics that you need to learn to succeed, (1) connect your territories, (2) get good board positioning, (3) expand at a certain rate [people debate the 'best' rate of expansion all the time, it's really irrelevent.], (4) cutting larger enemies, (5) take more dice than you lose.

There comes a point, and *this point* has been made many, many times in this forum before; when a person's best move is known by everyone in the game and watching -- when it comes down to it, since it's fairly simple to get to the point where you know what the right thing to do is, all opponents being equal, games are made or broken based on the two luck factors -- the start, and the rolls. Believe me when I tell you there are hundreds, if not thousands, of people that have reached the maximum skill level available -- most likely both at the top of the charts, and lurking farther down.

What makes KDice so great, and set apart from its ancestor, what makes this a real-time strategy game -- as opposed to a luck fest -- is the social interaction between players. Table image makes the game; love, hate, indifference -- the fear of retribution, and the desire for camaraderie. When everyone on the table is in awe when a neighbor runs his 8 stack away from your 6, or people destroy their game to prevent you from connecting in the first round -- that's table image. The true art in this game is understanding other people's state of mind, whether they are happy or angry, who with, and what that will make them do. Brilliance is changing their state of mind -- making them too angry, or happy with you -- directing the game (via chat), and creating an outcome that would otherwise be impossible -- overcoming your start, and bad rolls.

Brubaker,

Must be everyone that gets in the top 3 are there because rnd says so. I dont remember ever playing with you in August so obviously you don't even have a clue what happened that month. Practically every game I played with RND in August, he wrecked me so I left tables he sat at. If your social skills weren't so horrible, maybe you'd be at the 2000 tables and see my games just like everyone else that was there.

I suppose Vohaul and Zosod were sucking RND dick last month weren't they?

Brubaker i told you once i wouldn't go after you cuz i thought you were fair moderator type. Man am i a bad judge of character. Its not the points that you are making that are bad its when you say something that its so fictional that it makes you lose credibility. Bjumblies was the best player the month that he got second. And only a moron who doesn't know what they are talking about would say that. Ask the other people who were in the top ten. Ask bj's competitors. Ask BJ ask Dicey ask RND and Murti and joselito. BJ was the best player that month. And just cuz your a liar and bullshit artist doesn't mean you can steal that from BJ. You know what happened that month. I'll tell you what happened:
When i got sick bad and had to go and get surgery BJ could have won that month. But no he held back. BJ gave the month to me because BJ is a decent human being which apparently you are not. Its was not only bj but dicey and maybe even RND who i think held back. Perhaps you should open your eyes and read what is in the chat. Cuz if you had you would have known that. And you would have known that most people thought BJ was the best player that month. Words and communication are a basic part of being human brubaker. Talk with people, find out whats going on. Use words. Its not like there is some giant secret society plotting to get brubaker.

Here is what I don't get...

Brubaker --

If you love strategy games, embrace the strategy you need to get to the top.

Kdice is a game of multiple layers -- map strategy and social strategy... and within those two distinctions lie even more multiple layers. By understand and using these two layers together, the great players are born. Until you get this... you will just be another dude whining on the forum.

It's beyond me why you try to fight this... if you ban the chat box, you would also have to ban ANY sort of communication. No profiles -- because someone could leave a message with their AIM name on it. Then, you would have to ban players using any sort of IM system.

And ban the forum... no use that could be used to create some form of 'cheating'.

How far do you want to go to keep people away from each other?

Banning the chat box is pointless and to be honest boring. I highly doubt that anyone comes here just to click on some dice and roll them for hours at a time.

People come here because this game allows you to put many different skills to the test and most people understand that.

I guess what I find most surprising is that you of all people would suggest this... you seem to use chat and the forum to get a lot of attention. Every where I go, I see some post from you complaining about the chosen few or spouting off nonsense like you hate niggers and fags in a chat room. (Don't worry, I logged that conversation. I have it if anyone needs me to post this.)

For you, the chat seems to be integral to you getting what you need in life... just a little attention - be it positive or negative.

And lastly, this hegemonic view you have of the 'elite' class of players doesn't exist. Yes, I know that is hard to hear... but it doesn't.

Accept the game as it is and stop seeking attention. Stop talking about this 'elite' group because if it did exist, it's obvious you weren't a part of it...

Be powerful or be defeated... the choice is yours.

Taking away the chat would only help the so-called elite. For those with no clue, it's because newbies and regular folks like me won't have the chat box, but the people merely interested in gathering points will use Yahoo or something else.

I wanna be the very best

To beat them is my real test
To train them is my cause

I will travel across the lands
searching far and wide
Each n00b to understand
the power that's inside

RND! its you and me
I know its my destiny,
RND! Oh you're my best friend
in a world we must defend
RND! a heart so true
Our courage will pull us through,

You teach me and I'll teach you,
RND! gotta kill'em all
