a scoring tweak

In an effort to reduce some of the gameplay changes from the previous scoring to the current scoring I've made a small tweak today.

The tweak makes point drain more constant so that you don't dramatically lose points later in the game.

Instead of paying one ante per round you pay three antes per stage where a stage begins when someone is knocked out.

You should notice now that at any stage you will now only lose points for a drop in position or a change in dom share. (vice versa for gaining).

Thoughts?

It is certainly _a_ strategic part of the game. I don't suspect there are more than two simply-applied rules to doing as well as you can, but at the same time I am surprised at how many games I watch where one or both of the players don't know what they are.

I don't mind the phase all that much, I just think that a benefit of the every-round ante was that the leader got paid for her time if the challenger wanted to continue the battle longer than necessary.

.....i was just thinking of reviving the phoenix contest since you lose less points at 7th place...........

but now, when i have time to think about this new tweak.....i have three words to say:

finally!
excellent!
thanks!

It's a good fix, Ryan.

The biggest place the system was broken was 1st/2nd/3rd interactions -- milking noobs, quick flags, high chance of zero point 2nd.

This totally fixes that. Play is a lot like it was before, with epic 8stack endgame battles, cuts, countercuts, the whole enchilada. Excellent.

And thanks for all the good work you do.

Ryan, thanks for the continued improvements! It's working out quite well. End game is not so stressful anymore. :)

Major major improvement.

I was getting pretty frustrated with the previous point system. Things were very volatile. Huge gains and losses.

This one evens things out and I think will be a vast improvement.

Thanks for all your hard work:) As we say in Pennsyltucky, "You done good boy".

I have to agree with the conclusions made in this thread - originally by KDW who now supports the system

http://aplayr.com/kdice/kdice/forum/topics/new%20scoring%3A%20%205th%20is%20the%20new%207th%3F/

In more than 10 games since the change, I have seen 5th and 6th lose more than 7th - since they lose the ante immediately after 7th loses/flags. At every level, where 6/12 points used to be the max loss for flagging/losing on or before turn 3 - the loss has increased to 7/14. However, since the 6th/5th players immediately have to ante after this move, their scores for losing average around 8/18 and 7/16.

In addition, 3rd and 2nd place players do not benefit from this change - since 3rd has to ante to first, and 2nd has to immediately ante after 3rd loses. It's great if you are the frontrunner - scores of 20+ at 10 and 40+ at 100 for 1st have skyrocketed. I have noticed either 3rd or 2nd being more penalized though, depending on their previous dom (if 3rd was 1st for a while and flagged, 2nd loses out much more).

Anyway, after 10+ games, have only seen more penalties for being 5th-6th-7th vs the increased benefit of being 1st. Ty for working on the changes, but the immediate ante is not as helpful in the new change.
