Dottir takes 2011 yearly TAZD.
Posted By: skrumgaer at 6:09 PM, Wednesday January 4, 2012 EST
To qualify for the yearly TAZD competition, you must have played an average of 60 regular games per month, or to finish, 720 games.

The zero datum used was

07.2, 07.9, 10.2, 14.0, 17.5, 20.3, 22.9.

I have child-proofed the yearly TAZD, but I will not say in what way I have done it. The childproofing did not have to kick in in 2011.

***Special note: Actually the childproofing did kick in for Xar in the November standings, not because of any action of his, but by my compiling his January 2011 seventh place percentage as 14 instead of 14%. That happens if you don't include the final % sign when you capture the data with the mouse. Note that his final percentages added to 129%. Xar's corrected November standings should have been

0865 15% 19% 17% 14% 12% 11% 07% 13457 Xar

Here are the complete final standings:

Only one month until I officially retire from kdice after I win the yearly TAZD.

skrum, if you have a minimum of 720 games for the year, why is there still lots of weight given to people who play more games?

(i realize im biased here.)

basically, given that you have accumulated enough statistics to take significant variance out of the calculation, the TAZD rewards less 'skilled' players who play a larger number of games over people who play just enough to get over the 720-game requirement.

example being these two distributions:
14% 16% 16% 16% 13% 12% 10% 22916
21% 18% 17% 12% 13% 08% 06% 16846

imo, the latter distribution would reflect the greater 'skill'.

anyways, i propose getting rid of the games-played multiplier. just leave the minimum-games-played requirement, and that should weed out lucky-variance players and maintain the 'skill' measure.

thoughts?

The weight for games goes as the square root of the number of games. So for a constant level of skill, your TAZD does not go up as fast as the number of games you play.

The weight for games is to create an incentive for the better players not to sit on their laurels. Remember the fable about the tortoise and the hare? You and grandgnu the hares think you will win because of your high percentages, but you will have to keep playing well for at least a few more games to keep ahead of dottir and dirtyrolls the tortoises.

For players of equal skill, the number of places of finish and the variance in the number of places of finish go as the number of games, so the _standard deviation_ of the number of places of finish goes as the _square root_ of the number of games, so the square root of the number of games is the best way to compare scores of people who have played different numbers of games.

yes i understand all that. i just think once you have a multiplier that includes number of games (or square root), then the statistic doesnt measure 'skill' so much as 'time'.

Here the tortois number #1 answering since It's feeling alluded ^^
You've got a point there monte, anyway you have to admit how difficult is to keep the rhythm when you play more and more games, you just need to see your own stats. Notice how your 1st percentage is 25% when you play around 80 games, and it goes down to 20% when you play the double of the games (Really good job in May btw :) ) You are the same skilled player in both cases, the world around you is plenty of difficulties tho. More games, more impossible difficulties to avoid (bad starts, pges in the table, lag, or just a bad day).

Anyway, dont be so tight about my stats. All my months like a noob are included here, so imagine how hard im working to can compensate that! :P

Well Dottir, you have the month of December to dethrone me. But be aware by doing so, you could forestall my early retirement at least another year, and I don't think anyone wants that! :P

But, dottir, proportionally you won't come across a larger number of bad starts just because you play more games. You'll come across more numerically, of course, but you won't come across a larger proportion of them. At least, it's not likely that you will given your number of games is sufficiently large (such as the comparison between 80 and 160 games).

I know it wont be proportionally, starts are only part of the bad factors, and starts can be good ones too. I mean there are more "bad" factors than "good" factors (and the good ones are banables :P ) So, in the end, that will affect you negatively. Dont ask me how it does, but it happens, and i see it every months. I dont know anything about stadistics, but you know how many games i play per month, and that is what my experience is telling me.
