Beginner's Guide, by Grunvagr

Here is a list of bulleted tips for brand new players.

- END GAME TIP: when everyone has 8 stacks, you can get + dice (meaning reserves) by ending your turn. If you have 5 lands all with 8 dice, end turn. This will earn you +5 reserve dice. Now if you attack and win, you are all set. If you attack and lose you have enough dice in reserve to FULLY REFILL your 8 stack you attacked with. This is good so that no one can easily take your land with an 8v5 if you fail an attack. Very basic tip, very good to know.

- Understand the flow of the game. If you have a lot of land but few dice, stop advancing for a bit. Ending turn can spring up a nice stack up front to protect all your dice you just gained.

- Play seriously if you want to win, but never come across to others as though points are everything to you. Generally, players dislike this. Just pretend you are dying for first, then when you fail, are happy to settle for whatever you can get. Crybabies get fewer handouts than happy go lucky players.

- First move: Try to connect a few lands. Remember, a 5 against 4 is dangerous, but sometimes it is MORE dangerous to do the "safe" 5v2. Why? because, if that 4 stack wants to link across your lands to another stack nearby, it will come through you when it's their turn. Knowing this... why let THEM 4v2 or 4v3 you when you can 5v4 them? In the long run, it is an advantageous move. (dont 5v4 or 4v3 all over the place, but consider who are the likely people that want to set up a base where YOU DO and then weaken them first)

-"Islands" are little areas that you do not really want to keep, usually far away from your empire. Click them and attack your little 3 stack against the local 5 stack. If you win, you slowed the hell out of somebody and get a good laugh, if you lose, you likely will lose that land next turn, meaning your new dice wont be "wasted" on your island. This is called suiciding.

- Do not flag too quickly. The chatbox is there for a reason. It is legal (and sometimes entirely wise) to ask for help against a common enemy. "Hey blue, wanna ally vs mean ol' yellow?" "-ok-" Congrats, you just went from 3rd place to 2nd (or possibly 1st)

- For all the logic I employ with tactics, realize one thing, humans control these lands. If you take a land or two from someone, no biggie. If you take lands from one player, turn after turn, even if it 'makes sense' because you had a 4v2, realize that they will become very mad and probably want to kill you. This is not a problem if you are indeed bigger than them, but sometimes you can lessen the tension by going elsewhere, or making a joke in the chatbox about you taking all of their lands. Yes, you are punching them in the face, but for some reason people take to it more happily if you are light hearted about it.

- Use the chatbox. Be funny. Often, the use of humor can make people like you, especially at times when you are hilariously weak. For instance, I once went from 5th to 2nd because I had one land left, entirely surrounded by the leaders 8 stacks and I said: alright teal, you better flag to me or im going to cut you in half (at a time when I didnt even have enough dice to TRAVEL that far, and assuming i'd win 3v8s) He laughed. Then every turn I tried a 2v8. Why was I spared, the other guys were all serious and the leader was just having fun watching me 2v8 and fail turn after turn. By amusing him, I was spared. Humor is, in essence, a valid tactic. Note: Rare is the case I'm not the person in first, let's call this a hypothetical situaiton ;)

- Give it a few days, this game is NOT all luck.

- Do not get frustrated if you lose a 5v3, oftentimes the very next move you will defend a 6v4 and still be alive. Life's like that.

Have fun,

-Grun

I am displeased by your responses, Hakapeci.

Why do you criticize that these strategies are "OBVIOUS"? Try scrolling up. The only thing that is obvious is that you did not bother to read the very first sentence I wrote. The guide is written specifically for brand new players who do not know common tips.

Also, I don’t understand how you can say something is FALSE in kdice. I have played thousands of kdice games and watched many hundreds and these are general tips I threw together to help new players. This suiciding tactic has been employed by numerous monthly champions and top 200 players for as long as kdice has been around. I think it rather presumptuous to go ahead and call it FALSE. (and I never stated to always employ this tactic, I’m just explaining to new players that this is an option)

Yes, there are situations where you can purposefully choose not to take someone’s suicided stack, but there are also 5 other players who can potentially take the land even if you will not. And a land gained helps the conqueror gain strength as much as it helps person who loses an island, so there is a benefit to take them as well. Furthermore, an ignored island can grow to an 8stack that can devastate your lines as well. You should not suicide every single game, but if a land is very far away from your lands, it is not a poor decision to attempt to lose the territory. Of course, if no one kills your island, then it is also wise to just allow the island to grow. Later, when you go to 8v6 it because it’s time to safely remove it, don’t be surprised if the defender holds, making you regret not having killed it sooner.

Lastly, I was explaining how the use of humor can be pivotal in changing the perceptions of other players… and how it can be used to encourage people to not attack you at times. It has nothing to do with being someone’s little bitch, as you say, the point was exaggerated to provide a memorable example of humor’s impact.

I can’t believe I just bothered to reply to this.
Last note: None of these tactics should be done at all times. These are just tactics that are used and if you find them useful, then feel free to employ them.

Since you love to write, I was sure u will answer.

"I can't believe I just bothered to reply to this."

why? I tried to point in parts when I was in different opinion, and tried to explain what a foreign language speaker's english language knowledge was meade me avaliable. I didn't write comment like
"omg u lie u be fagg sicko rofl !!!!!4!"

... so don't say you make me a favour to answer.

1) "This attack with little to force them grab my restock-trap (or island)" is obvious, and as I wrote, obvious for US. U give an advice what not works, only about 50% in the games, but something what not a sure thing will happen, u can't pretend as a rule. Goddamnit, u want to give advices for amateurs, what be a nics idea, really. But don't say about guide and rules if this not a sure thing to be a good movement or decision. These was FALSE as a 100% working rule. And a guide should contain facts, not? Example, what about if they wait, not waste this and the island got only 2 plus dice, what enough to get more dice than the neighbours in that zone?? Him/Her chance to make the oppo weaker, or connect later will immediately increase.

And Grun: I was read your article, and to be honest, I made it from the start to the very ending and din't made critisicm in every contents just to fuckin' around. I was bother to read your writing, and don't necessary to be sarcastic.

2) Humor is a good thing, I totally agree. But don't do this to be somebody's puppet, or yeah, bith. While u sit in the corner on in the middle of first's, and don't do anything, don't fight because you was weaker and don't deserve the 2nd place, than in the same time the poor other guy fight with 1st, try to play but he can't get him deserved 2nd place. You should think about it. I'm not hateing, and not whining, simply feel this cornet-sitting (sorry, I still call it bitchin') unfair with the others...

Haka, why would someone as advanced as yourself be reading a "beginner's" guide? Surely these pearls of wisdom are nothing compared to the thousands of pearl necklaces you've had over the years!

Addendum to post...

If the grammar in a post wouldn't make it out of a kindergarten teacher's hands with a passing grade, then Ryan should immediately delete it. It HURT MY BRAIN reading Hakapeci's replies. Please stop.

Also...I think the more posts we have like Grun's, the better this game will be. It is a better way for new players to learn than to have to ask questions to OTHER NEW PLAYERS at the 0 tables. Good work sir.
