What would you think about an openly atheist presidential/congressional candidate?

Because we do not have a single representative that is openly atheist/agnostic. Which is baffling considering that (and I'm pulling numbers out of my ass here) I would guess that about 1 in 7 people in the US identify as one of those diety-less belief systems. I do not see why anyone could be so openly opposed to one of their representatives being atheist, or why a rep would be afraid to come public with something like this. Your thoughts?
So I guess the question we can use as a springboard: why would being an atheist/agnostic be so detrimental to the decision making process in the US? |

I'm going by dictionary definitions here. I assumed my language was clear enough, I give the kdice forums enough credit that I don't need to cite dictionary.com but maybe I'm wrong. Let me lay it out for you: Christians are gnostic theists. Gnostics believe special knowledge is necessary to spirituality Theists believe belief in at least one deity is necessary to spirituality Agnosticism by definition is a lack of Gnosticism Theism implies knowledge of or about a god or even the notion of a god. Is not the knowledge of such a concept as god instrically gnostic? Ergo are not agnostics by definition atheist? What assumptions am I making? |

whats to keep someone from observing the world around them, thinking shit this is complex stuff, it must have been created by some god(s). no special knowledge required. but def not atheist. hence agnostic? |

at 3:40 PM, Thursday January 5, 2012 EST Veta, atheism is a belief that god(s) do not exist. This is based on the assumption that God hasn't been proven to exist, that alone would qualify as special knowledge that an agnostic doesn't have. Atheism is as much of an act of faith as theism, agnosticism requires no faith or belief outside of the agnostics own observation.

at 3:49 PM, Thursday January 5, 2012 EST I read it skrum, I was simply portraying the thoughts behind why an atheist wouldn't believe in that. Your point that a person does not have to submit to the ruling authority due to a person not believing in Romans 13:1 is false though.

at 4:03 PM, Thursday January 5, 2012 EST In my atheist days, I developed an atheistic moral code. Since it was based on logic, which is part of God's dominion, it is a valid moral code for atheists in a Godly world. But the code contains only precepts that is is wrong for people to do particular things. It contains no affirmative obligations, such as submitting to the ruling authorities.
