Yeah I like succinct endings as well. However I believe that sitcom-like shows like Office could go on forever. The episodes are almost completely non-linear; with the exception of minor side stories. Very similar to Seinfield.

However for shows that follow a very strict progressing story; like Prison Break, Wire, Breaking Bad, etc; I feel like a good ending is necessary.

"Lost" completely jumped the shark on this.

i don't know i think that director could do this for 20 seasons and have them all be better than the previous season. at least thats how the show has gone so far.
