at 1:45 PM, Wednesday December 7, 2011 EST louis, not sure if you recall how Ryan arrived at the numbers for pre-March 07 points. he basically gave the #1 elo holder at that instant in time (darek, one of the original pga-ers) the max points (151,600). at first, there were no points given for pre-march (or until he instituted the poker-style accumulation of points)... all that existed was a ranking for pre-march, and then total elo-based-points for the next few months (back when like 30 points would win a month).
after he determined the gpokr-style accumulation of points was a good permanent change (fuck you sinth), he realized that it was a great decision to update the old months and include them in a career stat, so that the old players could brag about their total mastery compared to the newer players who never knew what elo months were like (kissing up to our collective egos -- genius.) the first time he chose normalizations for each month, he picked a method in which months that rnd wasnt around were weighted significantly higher, and months where rnd pwnd everyone were weighted significantly lower (i recall das winning a month with 21,337, whereas Ryan wouldnt renormalize rnds ?september? and left it as 5k only. we all lol'd at rnd, and rnd was def pissed, but pretended like he didnt care.) anyways, he eventually chose to normalize pre-march at like 1.5x what it took to win other months (100k-ish), and thats how we finally ended up with those numbers. now, since the numbers were based off of instantaneous elo, it basically rewarded everyone who played back then. the top 100 all got 100k+, compared to a normal month where 100th would get like a tenth of 1st's total points. another great idea, because we could all say, WOW, i got 100k+, i rock. and we would stick around longer and get more addicted and avoid more clickthroughs to his ads. the person who got robbed the most by the instantaneous elo freeze for placement was probably snufkin, as he had destroyed everyone for like 2 months straight, and was untouchable as the #1 elo. and he was a nice guy too. then darek got his pga buddy (buddies?), and for about 1 week, he skyrocketed and took #1 elo before we all realized he was an out-and-out cheater. then his elo appropriately tanked, and he never had a high score again. however, he was gifted a gold, and a crapload of points for pre-march because of the perfect timing of the elo-freeze. snufkin ended up 39th, which sucks. if you ask anyone who played a lot back then who genuinely won the pre-march era, they will never list darek, but will throw out such names as: snufkin, funk, bu, grunvagr, tzisc, comik. and i know im forgetting a few. look for some old threads, and you will find grun or cody list whom they thought were the best back then. |
