im writing a paper for my u.s. nat'l security class regarding my view of the prospects for success in Afghanistan (i think that our chances are low). i need to analyze problems caused by Pakistan connection and make recommendations for overcoming them where possible. also gotta consider domestic (afghanistan) issues.

so basically, how the U.S. can be successful in ousting al-Qaeda and/or establishing democracy, the problems and factors influencing this, and Pakistan's role in all of it.

if any of you guys have some insight or good talking points regarding the war, i'd appreciate it as it would give me some good ideas to incorporate into my paper.

friend of mine that has been there said that;

the stratigy that was used and worked in iraq is being used in afghanistan. the problem is that this stratigy worked because the iraqi population has a fairly high education level and is a mainly urban population. which is not the case for afghanistan.

he said the entire stratigy has to change

The American strategy of occupying a country to remove the existing form of government and replace it with one that is more of their likes and in their favor

- failed in Vietnam
- failed in Irak (see permanent bombing)
- will fail in Afghanistan

As long as the people in that country don't want to get rid of their government, you are bound to fail. And in the 3 cases above there wasn't enough objection to the removed governments within the country. Geographical aspects, religion and alike only add to that fact, they are not the cause. If the people hated Al Quaida, they'd be easy to catch - but they help them, or at least don't fight them.

That's the difference to the 2 cases where this strategy has or maybe will work out. Occupying Germany did work out (ok, we did not have religious issues plus there was hardly anybody able to walk left to fight), and I am very glad and thankful that it did.
Assisting Libya (they hated Ghadafi), bad example though as there was no invasion, might still work out.

Does that give you the paper you wanted?

Right - somehow. Germany we totally agree and as I said, among the best things that have happened to us.

Japan - yes to a certain degree (and I did forget about them, confessed), but they still got the emperor. However, talking about voting and business and so on, they moved a long way from "Last Samurai" somehow - though somehow it is still there from my impression.

Generally speaking I did not intend to say the US are doing bad, I just wanted to say, that you'll fail if the setup ain't right. And from my very vague and far away impression the Afghanistan setup is not too good.
