Stop asking mods....

To be:
Perfect - they are human
Perfectly consistent - not possible
Like public officials - they are not paid and only spend limited time here
Role models - no explanation required...this is a small website. We don't even expect multi-million dollar athletes or politicians to be role models.
Able to make changes - Our absentee landlord is the only one that can

To all you mods and a few others(Monte, das, etc):
STOP CONSTANTLY ARGUING WITH TROLLS.
Seriously, why are there so many 100+ threads that are mostly 4 or 5 people arguing with Veta? You should realize that is a waste of your time, you can never win. He's like the really annoying 5 year old brother that just keeps trying to annoy you. The more you react, the more he does it because he enjoys all the attention. Just ignore it. If you want to throw in a quick argument here and there, fine...but you wont get anywhere.

To only the mods (mostly thrax and jurgen):
Don't feel like if you don't respond to veta, that the community will think less of you. It's not like anyone here buys into the self absorbed ranting he does. If he says something like "crickets chirping, I win" or whatever....you don't have to respond. We will understand. Don't get sucked into all this. I know you guys don't like him and want to put him in his place, but that isn't possible.
You have to look at it in a similar way to how one should look at a bully(not that veta is one, he is clearly not)...just remember that his interactions with you make your life slightly worse ONLY WHEN THAT INTERACTION TAKES PLACE. Remember that his life SUCKS ALL THE TIME. The bully has a shitty home life with divorced parents, his father beats him and puts cigarettes out on his eyelids, his entire life is loveless, etc...the only reason he acts like he does is because he is a product of such a shitty combination of life circumstances. Nothing you say is gonna phase him because he has been used to much worse for his entire life.

To everyone:
Just save yourself the trouble and ignore trolls. Ask yourself why you feel compelled to respond to complete bullshit. Save your breath for legitimate arguments and discussions posted by RESPECTED members of the community.

Thanks you and I await all the "tl;dr"
Bye-ee!

-Moderators should be consistent, this isn't that hard to accomplish as every other website does so
-Guidelines should have been put in place a long time ago to aid in this consistency
-Each moderator is only consistent within their own set of guidelines usually, that's not collective consistency
-There should be a standard written for all moderators to use to justify their bans and to cite when a person whines about their infraction
-Jurgen is a two-faced type of a guy. On one hand he is pretty amicable, on the other he is pretty sadistic. I don't expect you to believe me, but I know from first hand interactions with him.
-Thraxle isn't a bad guy, sure he's conservative, but that's not his fault. He was probably raised that way.
-I have a pretty good life.

i realize you like to focus on this whole idea of consistency. i assert that the mods have been reasonably consistent. its just consistency cannot exist by definition in grey areas. two different people never perform the exact same offense in the same context. either the context is slightly different, or the offense is slightly different.

the problem is that the mod only has a binary option: ban or not ban. (although jurgs has been innovative with his warnings on review pages). every mod has a different definition of where the straw breaks the camels back, and a ban is reasonable.

but to say mods should be consistent in grey areas is simplifying the truth too much.

If you think "every other website" has consistent moderation you really should just stop talking. The sheer ignorance of that statement alone weakens your position to make it almost laughable.

We as mods use our individual judgement on a case by case basis for what we feel keeps the community healthy. In general free speech is respected and people are allowed to disagree in an open manner and even chide each other with off color remarks and the community has reacted intensely and immediately when a mod tries to restrict the open nature of communication on KDice, see Honda, E.

Your arguments here can often be defeated by the same logic you are using to make them. The issue over greekboi's fucking stick figures was the perfect example. You claimed objectively that peter luftig's avatar was porn and greekboi's wasn't when it was a purely subjective position and you reacted like you were wronged when it was pointed out that you were arguing from a false premise. Had you made the case that both or neither were wrong you would have had an intellectually honest position to argue from, but you didn't so you weren't.

When Gangsterr makes an honest, respectful and intelligent critique of your posting and behavior you react like he is wrong because you don't know him and he isn't supporting your position and since your ego knows no bounds the idea that you might be wrong is tantamount to chicken little claiming the sky is falling.

We as mods act using our individual judgement for what would be good for the community, we engage in open discussion with the community so people don't feel like we are the gestapo. When it comes to mod's disagreeing with each other for anything beyond minor semantics though we take that off the public boards and discuss that in private because no good comes from public mod bickering, see Harlequin, Hollly.

In the end, "Lighten up Francis"

For the record I did argue that both avatar were the same level of inappropriateness in that thread. At first I argued, under the premise of arousal, that greekboi's avatar could not be as pornographic as peter's but ultimately I suggested that both were equally pornographic in nature.

Monte: Just because two moderators don't have the same opinion doesn't mean the offense is in a gray area of moderation, it just means the moderators disagree. If you want to know the source of the whining and bitching about moderation... look no further. If the moderators had a set of rules they could look to and cite whenever making bans (that is to say the description could be the infraction broke... as opposed to Sam's "you're banned fuckwit") then I think we as a community would be better off.

Sam, again: most communities have guidelines for the moderators that have been set in stone and are used to cite and moderator actions. Kdice is not the norm, we are an outlier, an exception... much like the simplicity of our forum.

And again, the source of much of the community's chagrin is from what Sam said: that each moderator uses his or her individual reasoning to justify bans. This should not be the case, cops don't use their individual reasoning when deciding who breaks laws and who doesn't. Granted some cops let hot girls go on speeding tickets.

If the mods had a document, that they could alter as needed, to address these infractions and cite whenever banning an individual I think the whole community would be better off, I hope I've made my position clear.

Monday

I'm driving down the freeway going 64 MPH in a 55 MPH zone. I pass a cop with radar out. He doesn't come after me. I don't get a ticket.

Tuesday

I'm driving down the same freeway going 63 MPH in a 55 MPH zone. I pass a different cop with radar out. He races after me and gives me a ticket.

Can I be pissed at the cop that gives me a ticket? Both times I was technically breaking the "rules".

Using your example Rob. You see a car driving 100 mph on the high way, and a cop pull it over. Turns out to be a hot chick, so the cop lets her slide.

You're doing 75 in a 65 later on and another cop pulls you over and doesn't let you slide.

That sort of thing would piss me off, wouldn't it bother you?

The analogous kdice version of this would be someone being overtly OTF or breaking another kind of rule but being friends with all the moderators online, therefore suffering no consequences. While someone else, who has relatively no clout with the moderators or someone a moderator has a vendetta with does get banned for the same thing.

You see it would be rather frustrating, thank you for providing a real world analogy though.

Tools are people that are useful and do things for you.

For example, deadcode woul dbe a tool because he made the deadcode tools app for kdice.
