our understanding of physics might have changed permanently

they have meassured neutrinos at overlight speed. this might have profound effects for our understanding of physics.

but be careful, einsteins theories might still be true, the same way newtons theories still are true.

by this I mean, all our equations are very good approximations. so we can still use newtons equations on most cases, even tho the einstein equations are alittle bit better.

in most calculations we needed to use the equations, changing from the newton to einstein would just make maybe a difference in the 10th number. that is such a small error that one usually have bigger errors from other parts (like the messurement).

one only needed einsteins equations when one was calculating things where there where great forces, or great speeds.

probably this discovery (if indeed correct) will lead to finding the limit of einsteins equations. they will not be invalidated, but will no longer be thought of as as universal as they were.

futhermore it has been known for a long time that einsteins equations were not completely correct, they had a discrepancy when meting quantum physics. this is why people have been searching for the unifying theory of physics for many years. this discovery might be an important steppingstone on the way there.

also, it might all just be a meassuring error

"gravity has an instant effect." - seriously, who taught you that crap.

They could travel faster than light in Star Trek, therefore it's possible....duh. You just need to create a warp bubble and use/contain antimatter as your fuel. We also need to discover sub-space immediately.

Easy!

all you need is a bunch of element zero to change the mass of an object to zero, but keep its initial volume and structure. Then you can travel faster than the speed of light because you are masses and can transition between two positions without an energy penalty.

But on a more serious note, I can't wait until someone find a unifying theory of physics so i will never have to calculate another fucking hamiltonian.

@shev: newton did. singularity let's me doubt the endless of it's speed: no time but gravity. the theory of gravitons doesn't say anything else, so even the string theory doesn't conflict with it. i know there are theories that say it's just 10^10 * c. i know wikipedia tells you that its speed is endless. this is due to the HOPE to find it's speed non infinite. they just don't know it for right now, yeah i should have pointed it out. you might find a comic about it. gl.

@kreuzfeld: i was referring to "so he understands the concept [of black holes] somewhat well". i totally agree with you as black holes are included in a unified theory.

I personally experienced a "black hole" once up close and personal. I knew this girl and... well, we were... anyways, I can say I did do some of my own "measurements" and...uh, never mind. wrong thread perhaps.

alfons, it's not wikipedia that told me. i have a masters degree in physics and to achive that i had to deal with the math of that stuff. and then newton? you talk about black holes and want to apply newton? rofl!

Shev - you got a masters? I would have expected a Diplom ;-)) Masters are fairly new here.

Other than that, blackholes are like sinks. Everything vanishes and only a small potion of sound escapes occasionally :-)

Hey Shev, would you write me a recommendation letter?

louis i got an old master. i started in 2004 before the bologna reform. my uni offered an international physics studies program that let you go straight to master without having a bachelor. the regulations were quite similar to the diploma program.

nunes - im flattered, but i believe that letter would be worthless.
