Alan Krueger; expert on unemployment

Goolsbee jumped ship; so Obama had to appoint a new top economist. He is praised by the administration as an expert in unemployment...

I have never heard of the guy; so I have no idea.

This quote from his wikipedia entry is disconcerting though...

"Krueger compared restaurant jobs in New Jersey, which raised its minimum wage, to restaurant jobs in Pennsylvania, which did not, and found that restaurant employment in New Jersey increased, while it decreased in Pennsylvania."

(Bonus points if you can explain how the above is economically possible)

Didn't you just post a thread about politics earlier today?

Beyond being a hypocrite; you also need to reevaluate the rules. Nothing I'm doing here harms anyone or is against any rules.

i appreciate the posts. makes me a more educated voter. not that i agree with dead exclusively, i have gained a lot of insight on these forums from people who use it in a sort of diary-like way. its a good community here, and its good to learn from discussions.

i lol'd when the soon to be moderator monte said he gets his political insight from the kdice forums.

to dead: yes i goaded your response in a thread. i felt the otherside of the story should be represented what with all of your ron paul and conservative propaganda.

Nobody who posts on them has any credibility?

Yeah, I'm tired of people whining about the content of the forum these days too. I had a hand in politicizing these forums with my ambitious rants about Obama leading up to the '08 election. So I take SOME credit for the forum becoming what it is today.

Guess what, if you don't like a post on this forum and that post isn't offensive, YOU DON'T HAVE TO READ IT AND RESPOND TO IT. If the post is offensive in a demeaning or suggestive way, then THOSE posts should stop. Posts about politics, religion, science, sports, and the size of my short, fat penis are all acceptable here. And I too gain insight from the discussions here.....from everyone that contributes. People research a lot of their beliefs and offer articles that increase my knowledge of politics. I'm not saying there's a bunch of experts here, but the sharing of knowledge does occur.

Keep posting about politics. I enjoy it!

I don't mnd the politics threads, it's just that when they get to essay length, I don't really have the time to respond to them, heh

Expanding the base of where you gather information is the mark of an intelligent human. Solely relying on one source is what keeps people close minded (or brainwashed) and restricts growth. The basic idea of a forum is for a community to come together and share ideas and begin discussions on topis that are relevant or important. I see no problem with threads of any nature on this forum.

Whats funnier, getting political insight from the kdice forums or from Fox News?

well, getting it from snip bit cable news is a bad plan in any event.

at least here you can actually read the arguments that are presented, and we are trying to be logical, rather than emotional.

but to continue the discussion

dead, I believe economy should be approached scientific as far as possible, rather than philosophical, this means testing is a must.

I can imagine several reasons why people would get different results from the surveys, the main reason being that the survey was not that well done, so that certain segments can be enterpated either way, also disagreement about what it means to be employed. do you count a person with about 10% overtime as 1.1 job? if you add in a new guy to do the last 10%, is that then 2 jobs? teenagers tend to want 20% or 40% positions, so how do you count them? and how do you count their overtime? I bet the different people chose to answer these questions differently.

I wonder how our economy is doing in hours worked per person compared to other nations. That would be interesting.

If I had to render a hypothesis, the US probably has more hours worked/person in comparison to other nations.
