Just to make sure I'm not at fault here

Ok so here's the deal. I'm at home for the summer about to move up for university in a week. About a month ago I go up to find one of my friends had already moved into the room I wanted, and the landlord says it's first come first serve so I think fuck it, nothing I can do.
So all there is left is another decent room, and a small shitty room that noone wants. I go to the landlord's house and pick up the keys for the decent room, and it is then locked with some of my things in it. I am content. Today I get a facebook message from the last kid, saying that he called the room I took from the first time we went to see the house (which is true), and therefore he called a locksmith to change the locks on my room, and to make him a new key so he could move into my room. Is this normal? In my opinion, that room is my private property... Neither he nor the landlord has the right to unlock or literally break in to my room, take my shit out and put theirs in, just because he was the last to rent his room from the landlord... |

at 6:50 PM, Friday August 26, 2011 EDT I live in Canada and I'm pretty sure this is illegal as well.
My "friend's" rationale; was that I shouldn't have been a pussy about the other guy taking my room -_-. |

at 8:04 PM, Friday August 26, 2011 EDT actually it depends on if you have seperate leases for seperate rooms. if you are all on the same lease, then he can totally do that
I mean you can't drop your stuff in my house, and say it's illegal for me to move it...which is essentially what you're saying same thing happened when i lived with 6 of my friends i cant believe he called a locksmith that's classic you shouldnt have taken his room...he had nothing to do with it...you shouldve taken the room you wanted...i say pull strays and/or raise hell until you get what you want |

at 8:40 PM, Friday August 26, 2011 EDT I know what you mean travis. It is true the lease is for the house, and not for individual rooms. However, this also implies that in the middle of the year I could call a locksmith and do the same thing to him taking out his bed, dresser, and schoolwork, and call that my room...
The room I wanted was fully moved into, the bed had to be built in the room as well and taking that all out is just not an option tbh... W/e fuck them after this I'm probably not moving up there, and my landlord can go fuck himself for giving that kid permission. I'm not paying him fuck all more either. |

at 9:33 PM, Friday August 26, 2011 EDT Yeah I would say you should stand up for yourself. Either refuse the rent and get your own place or call bullshit and take your room.
Legally you have no leg to stand on; but socially I think that guy is just trying to intimidate you out of a room. Who would want to leave with friends like that? |

at 10:09 PM, Friday August 26, 2011 EDT Thanks dc and sorry for being a complete moronic asshole to you, in fact this university issue (not the room but these people in general) was a huge burden that was causing me to lash out my energy in places and against people I shouldn't have, and it's over as of today.
I most likely won't be paying rent anymore, even though what travis said is correct, the premise of what's going on is bullshit. Thanks for the input guys. |
