but while i'm on the subject i think these quotes are rather apropos "The first truth is... a democracy is not safe if people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism - ownership of government by... any controlling private power." - Franklin D. Roosevelt, 1938 "American fascists are easily recognized by their deliberate perversion of truth and fact... They claim to be super-patriots, but they would destroy every liberty guaranteed by the Constitution. They demand free enterprise, but are spokesmen for monopoly and vested interest..." - Henry Wallace, 1944 |

but yah dead raises a good point about how we need to end the bush tax cuts and the wars in iraq and afghanistan. i also agree with what he said about democrats being more fiscally responsible than republicans. |

Who said that? I didn't. When did I say that? I've often said that the recently (decades), the republican and democrat party are both terrible for the country. They both are bad for the country. I like the Bush tax cuts; but I think he should have reduced spending to live within the lower budget; instead of spending more like an idiot. |

but dead cutting revenue and then running up the deficit is outlined as an american conservative fiscal policy so it's not like anybody didn't expect them to do exactly that. what you're suggesting is dramatically shrinking the government as you decrease taxes and no politician can spin that into a reelection. i've always said that we do need voting reform though, something like the alternative vote would allow third parties to grow. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_vote as far as shrinking the government is concerned, i am of the opinion of the greatest president of our history, FDR: if the government is weakened that only serves to empower the private sector and ultimately disenfranchise the average citizen. it being the case that i like my enfranchisement, i don't particularly like the idea of weakening the government further (it's already a corporate puppet, making it weaker would only exacerbate this). i think the real solution to government waste/inefficiency would be transparency. but if you followed this reason then you'd be a progressive like me so i have a feeling you wont. |

You asserted this in a previous thread; and I asked you for a source; you ignored my request. Where is your source for this information. If it is just your opinion; then fine; but please don't assert is as fact. BO: "what you're suggesting is dramatically shrinking the government as you decrease taxes and no politician can spin that into a reelection." Not yet; but they will. American's are moving in that direction. And the debt will ensure that there is no other choice. BO: "i've always said that we do need voting reform though, something like the alternative vote would allow third parties to grow." Perhaps; but I'm unfamiliar with the "alternative vote". I'll have to read up on it. BO: "as far as shrinking the government is concerned, i am of the opinion of the greatest president of our history, FDR: if the government is weakened that only serves to empower the private sector and ultimately disenfranchise the average citizen. it being the case that i like my enfranchisement, i don't particularly like the idea of weakening the government further (it's already a corporate puppet, making it weaker would only exacerbate this)." I disagree with almost everything you said there. In fact the reason that the government is a corporate puppet is BECAUSE it is so big and powerful. If the government wasn't powerful; then the corporations would have no reason to influence it. The fact that the government can sign a bill and either make or break a company; makes it a necessity for each company to influence government however it can. The government is being used as a club; by corporations; to destroy competition. The government needs to be weakened; so corporations / politicians no longer can use it as a weapon. Making the government bigger is only going to make the weapon more devastating. |
