The Moderation of KDice

Good morning KDice community. I'd like to take a few minutes of your time to let you all know what I feel needs to be done to create a community that does it's best to eliminate cheating, scheming, and anything else that detracts from the fairness and authenticity of the monthly competition.
First, I'd like to give you a background on the business of my life these days. This will give you an idea as to why I'm not around much and probably won't be until April at the earliest. I'm 29 years old. I have a full time job. I'm married with a son who is almost 3 years old. I am in my senior year of college trying to earn my business degree, and my wife and I are trying to sell our house at the moment. You could eliminate any two things off that list and I'd still be pretty busy from day to day. I tell you all that to explain why I can't be here to watch game after game or very few tournies. I know Ryan is an equally busy man and I can't speak for any of the other mods, but outside of me an Verms the rest were originally appointed to moderate sites other that KDice. I have asked Ryan many times to appoint more moderators and my request has been denied every time with the exception of Vermont. Even if we had 5-7 active KDice mods, we could still only watch about 3-5% of the thousands of games that are played every day. I've also asked Ryan to allow the mods the ability to dock points and implement rc's on specific players. He hasn't said yes to either of these and I don't really expect him to. He doesn't have any reason to trust me, or any other mod more than he already does and I can understand him not wanting to give us too much power that can be easily abused. Hopefully you are still reading this wall of text up to here, so I'll go ahead and get to my point. The only way KDice is going to be properly moderated is for the community to take charge and self-regulate the site. Now I know the forum is filled with PGA accusations and copy/pasted chat logs every day, but all of these posts are circumstantial at best and I WILL NOT moderate based on them. Screenshots must be taken and must show enough evidence to incriminate whomever you are trying to catch. The only information that can simply be posted on the forum and warrant a ban is a login ID and a password to prove an account is shared. I personally do not know how to take screenshots and upload them to a website that allows you to share them. I am offering up a ***contributor badge*** to the first person that creates a post on the forum explaining how to properly do this. It should include the following: -how to take a screenshot -how to save a screenshot -how to upload it to a website and save it -how to share it with others (please include a list of websites that can be used to upload screenshots) If you are fed up with cheating and scheming, educate yourself on how to gather evidence and report it to me, or Verms, or any of the mods. If you do not want to publicly post this gathered information on the forum, feel free to e-mail it to me at [email protected]. If you know login/password info to other players accounts (shared accounts) and you do not want to post it on the forum, feel free to e-mail it to me at [email protected]. I will be happy to keep my informants anonymous if you are worried about your internet ego. If you don't trust that I will keep your identity anonymous, create a fake e-mail and send me the information anonymously. Please keep in mind that if you are trying to catch someone PGAing someone else, I will need a series of screenshots showing the entire game(s) and not just one screen shot of the end of the game. One screen shot isn't enough evidence to prove PGA. While I may not be able to watch a lot of games/tournies, I do check the forum multiple times every day and I check my mod e-mail at lease once every day or two. If you want me to get information from you, either method is fine. A long time ago Ryan said that he hoped the upper players would choose to self-moderate each other rather than allow the continual cheating and scheming. I think the site may actually be ready for this. Please share your thoughts/ideas regarding this wall of text. Thanks, Thrax |

at 3:37 PM, Monday March 1, 2010 EST haha chase. after some introspection, the main reason i turned anti-scheming was the same reason that makes everyone hate yodel or troy or whoever. i thought to myself "im tired of cheaters beating me."
that jan 08 month really fucked me up. i had been trying to get a gold since june 07, and had a couple shots, but didnt get lucky. then january i finally said screw my real life, im investing shitloads into winning a gold. but then leek decided the same thing. and we played a shitload of games against each other. i would regularly curse him for how obv murti was throwing him hundreds of placements, and he would do the same about how wish would that for me. and then things got weird and rnd told me he would pga me as leekstep and i was like wtf. and that really set me off, because i thought i could compete with leek, but no way could i compete with leek+rnd. same thing as someone running into onix as an opponent. vega has good strats, but most feel they could compete with him. BUT, if you throw in your otf crew, onix all of a sudden is next-to-impossible to compete with. its an unfair advantage you get when you combine two people's abilities into one account. and that pissed me off, that 1) i destroyed my real life in jan 08 to win that gold, and 2) i was going to lose (perhaps) because there was an unfair advantage against me. even if leek was playing 90% of his own games, there was still a group of players who helped him out a ton because they associated him with rnd or fiero. (cue the bitching about how biased my account is.) anyways, then i realized the only chance i had at winning a month was 1) scheming up an advantage, or 2) destroying my opponents' schemes (if they existed). so i turned rat, and anti-scheming. lots of others have turned to option 1), and i dont mind that, thats their prerogative. they know i am not to be trusted, and will try to rat them out. its a fun game that has nothing to do with rolling dice, but all about gaining false trust. its fun. i applaud the schemers when they win a month, because they got away with it (i dont applaud them if they caused me to lose 1st, think upmax/fiero). and hopefully (id like to think) they applaud me when i successfully rat out their scheme. basically, all things considered, i am a fucktard who tries to play both sides of the fence. |

at 3:54 PM, Monday March 1, 2010 EST The problem with ratting out a cheater is that antoher cheater takes his place in the standings. OMG ONLX was a shared account... SO FIERO GETS GOLD? Everyone knows ONLX played a higher percentage of legitimate games than Fiero600.
And you only get really good incriminating information from your friends, so only your friends who cheat get punished while all the other cheaters don't get punished. Anyway I don't think there are any top players who can claim that 100% of their games didnt include some form of game-to-game favors. We need more mods like Monte who has time and experience to know what is going on. |

at 3:58 PM, Monday March 1, 2010 EST if my wife doesnt even trust me to mod my own household, i doubt i should be trusted to mod kdice.
and fuck you leek, you make good points. except some months, 2nd place would be a legit 1st. just not during the onlx/fiero month. or the leek/monte month. hell, we both agree that 3rd place was a bigger cheater than either of us that month. jan 08 gold shoulda gone to kam. (kam just cussed out his monitor.) |

at 11:50 PM, Monday March 1, 2010 EST BTW Verms,
For video screen capture on mac: go to http://store.shinywhitebox.com/ and download iShowU, it works fine it just has an add to buy the full program across the screen in the recording but that shouldnt effect anything for these purposes (all other video screen capture programs cost $). After you stop recording the file for the video will be in whatever folder u saved the iShowU program in. Then upload it to utube or just email the file to thrax (easier). |
