The earths surface emits infrared radiation, namely it sends some of the energy sent by the sun back into space. CO2 absorbs infrared radiation and converts it into thermal energy -> it gets warmer. Even if the current global warming is not "caused entirely by mankind" it would be a smart move to reduce Co2 emissions to slow down the process. Nature doesn't act purposeful. We can.
