I find it hard to decide which point system was actually better. That said, both the new and old system have hardly any statistical significance in determining the 'best' player (for example in the current system it's possible to win way too large amounts of points, relative to how much effect it has on your ranking). And even in a decent point system it would take thousands of games to establish a remotely realiable ranking...

But the main problem with kdice is not so much with the point system, but rather with the gameplay. There is too little incentive for an aggresive style, a player who looks like he's going to take first will take first because people are scared of fighting and losing.
I don't think it has ever been much different, diplomacy just worked differently in the elo days.

Problem with ELO was, that the "top tables" were like a closed group. Getting in there was hard for new players. Of course it was more fun when you were in.

We have similar things now on 2k and 5k. Too much old trusted friendship and long known fellows. That's why many don't play there though they could.

The good side of ELO was, that you did not have to visit the noobs every month... Maybe a certain percentage of your points should be given as a rewarding start-advantage in the current system. You have some presorting, kamikaze style point hunting at month end could be reduced and still the chance of getting up there would be given...

Just an idea that's misplaced here of course ;-)

What really needs to be removed is the flagging for position. It reduces incentives to fight and actualy hold a position. Seriously I think ELO era flag system with maybe a slightly fixed dom and point structure would increase good play. Hello Ryan?

honestly I don't think any system will fix it.

point whores will always be point whores, regardless of system.

the chatbox always wins.

I hate the points reset ... some months, I'll only play 10/15 games. Sometimes one a day. I can't really get to the 5k tables that way, and playing on the 0 tables is like some sort of torture, where you can envision a fun, engaging strategy game, but can only play a bizarre version of it where there's only luck. Sure, the first few days of the month I play with competent people, but after that, it deteriorates and frankly I have no incentive to win points that'll be useless in a week. It takes out the casual and makes kdice a job or a chore.

totally agree now with int and i_suck.

my only goal now is the career rank, which nobody care too much about that...

it was mindnumbingly easy for new players to get to the top tables, but it certainly wasn't hard. it was a good thing.

Int with flag and surrender you could whore points with and without the chat box. This is also predicated on Ryan not making dom as stupid as it is right now.

The current system the only way to amass points is to be ridiculously aggressive and a little lucky or chatpwn the board everygame. The ridiculously aggressive only works in short runs.

With elo style flags you would have to hold your position to get it. This means you would be less likely to leave someone in the corner that wants out later to fight, games would be cleaner in some ways.

Sure no system is perfect but we can see what the current is and we know we have had better. With so many iterations of kdice now it has to be possible to take the good and the bad and put them together.
