The chart is basically an algorithm as to how to draw a phylogenetic tree. For example, the first line of Chart #2 says "dendogram w/2 branches and 100 members at h=1.17". If you were to draw this chart, draw your first horizontal line at a height of 1.17 inches (or centimeters, or whatever). Then look at the next line. It has one vertical slash mark, and it represents the left end of branch you have just drawn. It says that there are 18 members on this end. Then look down the vertical line (or count off 18 'leaves') until you find an accent grave (`). This is the corner bend that marks the right end of your first branch. This line will say that it starts a subbranch with 82 members. The heights indicated in these two lines (h=0.436 and h=0.591) are the heights at which you draw your first two subbranches. After you have drawn the two subbranches, continue to draw the second-order, third-order, etc. subbranches. The value of h is the degree of difference between the members on the two sides of a branch. So the higher you have to "jump" to get from your place to someone else's, the greater difference is that player from you. |
