Thoughts on a domless month

So tournies will definitely no have dom. The games play fine. But should this be something to consider for regular tables?
Is dom now irrelevent? A big negative of dom score is that it makes things really complicated. Another is that it doesn't reward well for comebacks. So, if there's not a compelling reason for it i think we should consider getting rid of it? Maybe just for a month to test it? The reason I think it's become less relevant is because of flagging for position. Dom was a tool to give less reward to players who "turtle" and get second. It would largely work because leading players won't attack non-aggresive players. But now, when other players flag they'll put their focus on the turtlers and there is much less chance they'll get a high position. So in effect, flagging for position makes the turtle strategy less effective, and that makes dom a little irrelevent. So what are you're thoughts? |

at 12:32 PM, Thursday October 23, 2008 EDT Eliminating dom will make "revolts" a much more common occurence. Grabbing an early lead and holding it will no longer be as important as it is with dom. If 1st place is revolted against now, they at least have the ability to fall back on the dom points they've earned. If dom is eliminated this will not be the case.
Eliminating dom may make it easier to cheat as well......... |

at 12:33 PM, Thursday October 23, 2008 EDT I think it's a good idea. It will encourage fair play. There should be less of a penalty for flagging earlier. I mean -472 is a bit much for 500 tables.

at 12:39 PM, Thursday October 23, 2008 EDT I think its pretty common for people to see games where there is an early lead as luck-based and somewhat boring. So I don't mind losing a bit of this.
As for cheating, yes it makes it a bit easier to get more points from cheating. But it also makes it more apparent that cheating is happening - especially with flagging for position. I think the answer here is the RC and more enforcement rather than dom. For early loses, I like the way the scoring is done on the test server. Basically you pay points to play a game and need to place 4th or higher to get them back. For example, at a 100 table everyone gives 100 points. 5th, 6th, and 7th leave and loose their 100. 4th gets his 100 back. 3rd, 2nd, and 1st split the remaining pot in (something like 20%, 30%, 50%). The points are very clear. You know what you will lose before starting. |

at 12:39 PM, Thursday October 23, 2008 EDT I think you should just go back to october-december scoring, that seemed to work just fine. Work flagging for place into that scoring model and I think kdice would be perfect.

at 12:42 PM, Thursday October 23, 2008 EDT It's a very interesting concept, and it may actually speed up play. No longer will you have to wait for "the dom to kick in" in the 10-14 rounds. It deserves more discussion, but the idea sounds interesting.
I like the idea of "buying in" to a game. But how will this work at the beginning of the month when nobody has points? What happens when your points drop to 0? |

at 1:13 PM, Thursday October 23, 2008 EDT Keep Dominance! Without it, cheating is made so much easier, and small players see no incentive to expand. Dom is essential to the pace of the game! Sitting around with 2 stacks, not taking any risks is the optimal strategy without dom, because you can bet on other small players to get killed off first.
I say, revert the dom system to the August '08 settings. Back then there was no need to "max" dom as is now required. i remember a time in '07 when dom hadn't been implemented yet, cheating was rampant. The big player would just protect one territory of his buddy and slowly kill off the rest. Let us not enable this again! |

at 2:15 PM, Thursday October 23, 2008 EDT It does sound interesting. However I'd wait for how the MTTs turn out. Then we'll see how people play when there's no dom around. I know it won't be too accurate but it's still better than just trying to guess on what's gonna happen.

at 2:33 PM, Thursday October 23, 2008 EDT It depends on why you want you would rather have a domless month instead of working with the current dominance based system. With all allegations of cheating aside, it will be a very frustrating transition for people to go back to the ruthless "truces take all" way of playing.

at 2:37 PM, Thursday October 23, 2008 EDT Is it just coincidence that when I read Ryan's post about turtling that a bunch of e-Bay links about turtle neck sweaters, turle this, and turtle that, pop up to the right of the kdice logo at the top of the page?
