Flagging for place sucks! Am I the only one who things so?

Here is the set up.
A game is well established, there are four or more players still in the game and all are more or less evenly matched. The game has broken down into two or three separate battles, two players hitting each other, and ignoring everyone else. Suddenly, one of the players gets a two or three spaces advantage in one of the battles. His opponent throws in the towel and flags out. The guy with the advantage, now in first or second place, no longer has worry about his flank. He turns and attacks the player on the other side. This third player was in his own mini battle, and now suddenly finds himself being hit from two sides at once. One turn he has a good chance at first, the next he is lucky if he lasts for the next three rounds. I have lost count of how many times this has happened. One moment I am holding my own with a good chance of winning the entire game, the next moment someone has flagged out, and I’m being attacked on multiple sides. Flagging for place has become an automated way of forming alliances in every game. The game starts out with everyone for themselves, and half way through the game the player who has earned second with a good chance at first is suddenly finding being torn to shreds by the player in first, and the guy who flagged for third. Second place guy (even if he gives up and flags) is lucky to get forth. I have been playing KDice consistently for the last 12 months, and have seen all of the different incarnations of flagging. Each had their problems, but those problems were caused by individuals who abused the system. Flagging for place negatively effects everyone and every game played. Simply stated, flagging for place is sucking the fun out of this game. Comments anyone? |

at 1:09 AM, Wednesday June 18, 2008 EDT it was that way when flagging = death. People just said I surrender instead of flagging. In other words they made an alliance to secure their position which is the same thing that flags do now, only the flags helps prevent "surrenderers" from changing their mind.

Make flag = death, and you will see the pleas of "I'm flagged stop attacking me" go completely away. What'll you'll see come back is "hey red lets truce", except if it's from a ninja flagger red will say "no thanks you're too weak" and will then proceed to trounce red. > This suggests that alliances are now forced or something They are encouraged by kdice economy by the existence of the flag check box, which is good as them being physically forced. |

at 12:35 PM, Wednesday June 18, 2008 EDT Your scenario is just multiplayer dynamics. What you're implying is that you don't like the social/alliance aspect of the game.
You could have: 1) Tried to truce your enemy with the common "let's stop killing each other" or "let's take care of teal first" suggestions. 2) Tried to truce the winner of the other fight or somehow get him on your side, e.g., "I've left you alone / helped you, teal" (if true), "I'll flag 2nd to you, teal" 3) Worked to position yourself so that it's harder for the 3rd player to attack you, and easier for him to attack your opponent. If they only had 1 place to attack you but 3 or 4 to attack the other player, it's more likely they'll attack the other guy. 4) Be more social throughout the game--I think it's generally true that people will attack the silent guy over the one that's talking, all else being equal. ...or many other things. The point being that flagging really isn't the issue in your scenario, and you can choose to work with the system and rules rather than just complaining about them because they don't match your preferred playing style. If you want a "every man for themselves", "everyone goes for the leader" version of kdice without flags or other social complications, then dice wars is for you. |
