why?
1) we dont know who they are 2) we dont know what are the rules 3) we dont know what the possible penalities re 4) we dont know if they have access to historic chat or game stats to determine if someone has violate something here 5) it seems that racism is tolerated here the death of kdice is near....... |

at 5:37 PM, Tuesday May 20, 2008 EDT lesplay, as i mentioned on the player notes I made the block because of gratuitous use of racist slang. Lesnotpretend that the 'N' word isn't highly offensive to some members of the community.
To all, if I have made a block I will post a note on your player notes and you can search for me here or, more usually, on gpokr. We can talk about and get it lifted. |

at 5:58 PM, Tuesday May 20, 2008 EDT les, nice post, seriously. A few people are saying the same thing, i feel that people like lovekdicetodeath don't have the capacity to think below the surface, i don't mean that in a bad way, you may not have the life experience yet.
JulesDogg, i find you slighty hypocritical and thus can't trust your opinion, your usage of words you deem unnecessary on this thread followed by the blanking of the word that i can only presume is nigger. Stick to your convictions. |

at 9:45 PM, Tuesday May 20, 2008 EDT First things first, let me say that I am in support of having moderators.
However, the current system is terrible, for multiple reasons: 1. There are no official rules for users It's ridiculous to have a moderating group when there aren't any standards are guidelines that users have to follow. Essentially, what's being done right now is Ryan saying "behave well, else you will deal with the wrath of my moderators," whilst never specifying what it means to "behave well." Players cannot be expected to follow guidelines that do not exist. 2. There are no official rules for moderators. There are multiple issues within this one issue: 2.a Moderators have no rules to enforce Similar to the other issue, this stems from the fact that there aren't any actual rules for players to follow. Moderators are given the power to moderate as they see fit, creating an environment that is, from a rules perspective, conflicting and unreliable. Moderators can have different ideas of what is allowed and what is not, and a player can never know what what to expect from any moderator, which they should definitely be able to do. 2.b Moderators aren't forced to moderate With no actual rules for moderators to go by, there's nothing enforcing them to actually do anything. While they probably will, on many occasions, do something or other, it's no problem for them to just sit back and do nothing on other occasions. If they're feeling lazy, they can just pretend to not notice or not care. If they're dealing with a friend, there's nothing prohibiting them from taking it easy on that friend. They can moderate at their own discretion, forever able to just not bother or to play favorites. Without having any actual rules that they must enforce, there's no way to qualify their quality, or prove that they're doing their job. Moderating becomes another method of helping your friends and dealing with people you don't like. 2c. Moderators have no rules to follow Moderators can deal with issues however the hell they want. Chat banning? Play banning? Just a verbal warning? Not only can a player never know what a moderator will punish, but also how they will punish. Will a bad joke earn them an extreme penalty? Will a severe offensive remark just earn a warning? It's impossible to determine what is fair. All together, it must be remembered that in the end, the rules are here for the players. They are supposed to create a fun environment for people to play in and enjoy themselves without worry. But the current form of moderating gives nothing to the players but paranoia and fear. So long as a player is not informed how they should behave, and what will result from behaving otherwise, rule enforcement does nothing for them but create a stressful atmosphere. Right now, all we have is a playground for moderators, not an effective method of controlling misbehavior. |

at 10:04 PM, Tuesday May 20, 2008 EDT Those are all valid points.
The purpose of mods is to help protect the community from excessive crap / get rid of obscene avatars more quickly / and to shut up players that are harassing others and preventing others from enjoying the games here. Discussing things on the forums though, will not change anything. Moderators are here for now and we are going to see how this system works. So for that to happen, is has to BE in place for awhile to monitor how things are going. Now, what you CAN do is take ideas to the idea forum, rather than posting here on the forums. We understand how some of you feel about mods not doing enough, while others fear we moderate too much and are outraged. For those worried that we are not taking a harsh enough stance vs people that offend you then do try the idea forum. For example: at the moment all a mod knows from someone copy / pasting a chat is that it MIGHT have happened (people can forge stuff), so it is merely accusation (unless of course, posted by several players confirming it). Now, if there's a way to capture part of a chatlog for later review by a moderator, that might be helpful. (we'd know it happened at a real table and that it was upsetting) Problem is, we can't be saving thousands of chatbox logs or it will likely overwhelm the servers, etc. However, I'm sure there can be SOME way / new idea to help moderators to...do their jobs. As for what specific rules cannot be barred, again, the reason there is no set guidelines is because writing said guidelines would be very time consuming and require meticulous attention. (which is to say, nobody has bothered to write one yet, technically) Things that would make the list for sure include: -obscene avatars / nudity / graphic pics -harassment of another player *which* persists after the player asks the other to stop (example: they follow up and post a note on the others page something something negative) Cuz you have to remember - you can mute someone that annoys you, but when someone goes out of their way to bother you, that is basically harassment. -flooding the chatbox so that nobody can enjoy the tables... it's acceptable for a funny joke or something, but MINUTES-worth of spamming at a table so others cannot chat effectively is harassing others and affecting their ability to enjoy the games. To really bring about change - take it to the idea forum, try to think an idea through and write it up the best you can. Helping moderators TO moderate, whether its a "request button" to review something, to call someone over if one is online and available , etc is up for discussion. PS: Grun needs to write more essay-long posts, imo!!!! |

at 1:32 PM, Wednesday May 21, 2008 EDT 'assume' and 'flimsy', i wasn't guessing you to be a hypocrite, i was making a statement based on what you said. 'cunts' and 'motherfucker' were the words you used, along with suggesting your children play this game, i assume (this time) they can read, don't they learn more from their parents more than anything else? i just hate hypocrisy, i just thought you may like to correct yourself, that's all. I know it's a small thing but if you can't moderate what you do when moderating what everyone else does...
All moderators are going to have trouble finding other peoples respect and Grun has got mine, i hope all others can follow suit. A fair point i think. |

i totally disagree. i thought the forum is a channel for us to voice our opinions. a lot of great changes from kdice since the elo days came from discussions from the forum. ryan himself have posted here before asking for our input. he could have just use the idea forum but he didn't. "post in the idea forum" the idea forum is a great addition. unfortunately, the order they are listed is based on the number of votes. so, once you post a new idea, it will sink to almost the very last page and no one will see it. solution to this is to have a button to sort the ideas by vote or by date posted. |

at 4:04 PM, Wednesday May 21, 2008 EDT No one really seems to understand a crucial point: there aren't enough moderators in the first place. Three for kdice, and one more for xsketch.
That isn't enough, and although it shouldn't be the priority, there should be at least one on the game at most times, somehow (dunno, but since this is a global community, this might work) Also, even though TheY had a very insightful post, I have no idea how he believes that there is no understandable set of issues the mods must deal with. From my point of view, they must deal with: -Obscene avatars -Abusive & offensive chat unrelated to kdice and it's known shortcomings -cheating players (more often than not in xsketch; we don't need to reevaluate cheaters in kdice) We've only had mods for a few weeks now, so the game will still be a little rough around the edges. I find it slightly odd that the moderators we have are being jumped on for doing a shoddy job when they haven't had much to moderate. |

at 4:14 PM, Wednesday May 21, 2008 EDT Also note, am i the only one who finds it funny that Ryan has only played three games this month, and while he is sometimes around and watching, he hasn't given any difinitive instructions to the mods, yet no one is listening to their reasoning...
I think if we take a look at the actual purpose of a mod (sorta like a mini Ryan) then maybe some of you will understand. Also, how many of you are actually offended by the stuff people say here? even "bitchniggercuntassgayfaggotshitlicker" doesn't give me much to worry about cuz they look like morons once they type that stuff. |
