why not get rid of swearing and abuse all together?

what the tite says, really.
there's obviously a lot of confusion at the moment over what constitutes mod-worthy abuse and what doesn't. call me a complete prude if you like (im not), but to be honest, i'm of the opinion that all foul language and behaviour is pretty unnecessary and contributes nothing to the game. arguments in favour of swearing ("it's natural" "everyone does it" "people can't help themselves") are all really lame and actually untrue, it's really easy to get through a game, or a discussion, without swearing at someone and the only reason people do it right now is because they can. i've been a member in a lot of forums which get by perfectly well without it, and nobody ever asks for swearing to be reinstated. we've been 'lucky' in kdice to get this far without vulgarity and abuse being much more heavily moderated, and it's obviously about time. |

at 5:37 AM, Monday May 19, 2008 EDT From my first post, "I've never been given an explaination as to why a word such as "shit" has a more negative connotation than its synonymous counterparts."
So why is this word deemed offensive or foul? |

at 10:40 PM, Monday May 19, 2008 EDT while a missionary in taiwan, i once let one of my taiwanese friends (a recent convert) borrow my video camera because she wanted to film some junk over a weekend. she was quite proud when she returned it and insisted that i watch the contents. she filmed some random noname band. i was underwhelmed and not really paying too much attention until out of nowhere, in the film, she says, 'oh shit!' in english (keep in mind, she doesnt speak english at all).
so i stopped the tape, and explained to her that she should NOT say that word, especially since she is a Christian, and should be a good example. she was dumbfounded, and replied to me, why not? you say it all the time. i was like, what????? i NEVER say that word. she insisted time and again that i did. then i realized what the miscommunication was. i explained that i said 'shoot' all the time, and how that was completely different. she gave me a very dumbfounded look again, like... wow either the english language or the american culture is really screwed up. and since then i realized that cussing isnt that offensive. ive actually started saying 'shit' instead of 'shoot' and 'dammit', 'fuckin', instead of 'durnit', 'friggin'. as a Christian, i guess, the only thing that matters is your spirit when you use the word. if i say GOSHDARN YOU instead of GODDAMN YOU, but my spirit is really saying the same thing either way... then im just as at fault if i say goshdarn as if i were to say goddamn. of course, this story doesnt really pertain, as this is an online game full of greedy assholes who dont give a shit about spiritual stuff, but only care about alltime points and trophies... so you can just take the story as a montecarlo bit of humiliation. god, taiwanese culture is so much better than american culture. americans are so screwed up. |

at 8:04 AM, Tuesday May 20, 2008 EDT As a matter of fact, it depends on me if I allow the person talking/writing to me to insult me.
Most people I refuse to give that privilege. They can say what they want, like worms can't beat me at chess (considering my luck any insect beats me at kdice...) they can't insult me. So, if I want to feel insulted, almost anything can be insulting (like, "good morning" when it is raining here...), but it is me that is allowing the insult. In consequence, ban those that complain about insults, because they create them. Hint for the humor impaired: that last conclusion might not be a serious one. |

at 10:39 AM, Tuesday May 20, 2008 EDT In Word when I'm writing a paper it automatically replaces words when I misspell them. Could we use something like that to automatically change words?
It could automatically turn curse words or racial slurs into cute words like: "Bunnies" or "flower pedal" Then when someone says something potentially offensive it would be funny =) YOU FLOWER PEDAL BUNNIE FACE!!!! I'LL HUG YOU YOU SUGAR COOKIE EATING, HOMELESS LOVING FLAGGER!!!! Think of the potential! =) Also I have seen some posts where people are mad at moderators for not banning things they found offensive. I think that this is kind of ridiculous. The moderators are nice enough to spend their time policing the chat, who are we to tell them they are failing. It's not like they are getting paid. Thanks moderators! =) |

at 11:26 AM, Tuesday May 20, 2008 EDT nice idea iluvdices.
Sophie, Ryan would lose about 45% of his users if we eliminated or forced censored chat, becuase of the nature of the game itself. "it's really easy to get through a game, or a discussion, without swearing at someone and the only reason people do it right now is because they can." Umm, have you ever played kdice? obviously, but I cannot comprehend how you believe you above statement in regards to kdice. I'm sure by now you understand that, as well as you should be able to understand how boring and very irritating it would be to have to walk on eggs with what we say here. "we've been 'lucky' in kdice to get this far without vulgarity and abuse being much more heavily moderated, and it's obviously about time." Sorry, again, but there's been much worse in the past (Vermont should agree with me this time) |

at 1:30 PM, Tuesday May 20, 2008 EDT i'd hope this game would lose more to be honest, 60%
nice post shevar, and someone MUST have hacked montes acount, i think i'm feeling a bit of respect for him, i could be wrong. But that's the point, isn't it the intent behind the post and as everything on here is 90% anonymous, how can you feel any intent this insult may have...(the other 10% is the people who actually know each other yet rip each other new ones, monte and fin ... i think, i forget) after all those good posts against sophs wishfull start, i pronounce this thread finished. |
