why not get rid of swearing and abuse all together?

what the tite says, really.

there's obviously a lot of confusion at the moment over what constitutes mod-worthy abuse and what doesn't. call me a complete prude if you like (im not), but to be honest, i'm of the opinion that all foul language and behaviour is pretty unnecessary and contributes nothing to the game. arguments in favour of swearing ("it's natural" "everyone does it" "people can't help themselves") are all really lame and actually untrue, it's really easy to get through a game, or a discussion, without swearing at someone and the only reason people do it right now is because they can. i've been a member in a lot of forums which get by perfectly well without it, and nobody ever asks for swearing to be reinstated. we've been 'lucky' in kdice to get this far without vulgarity and abuse being much more heavily moderated, and it's obviously about time.

True, the foul language and behaviour contributes nothing to KDice, but this does not mean we should eliminate it. A homeless man contributes nothing to society, should we kill him? One thing I enjoy about the internet is the fact that people can say what they want to say, becuase they know repercussions will be slim to none. As for swearing, It is really up to the individual whether they are offended or not; I do, however, believe that racist slurs should be moderated because of the dehumanization they stand for. I've never been given an explaination as to why a word such as "shit" has a more negative connotation than its synonymous counterparts.

Whether something is offensive or not is what is explicitly or implicitly agreed upon by the speaker and listener. The purpose of speaking is to convey a message to the listener, so the listener must necessarily understand the intent of the speaker.

The term "Yankee", for example, is meant to be offensive when used by some speakers and listeners, but not when used by other speakers and listeners. Or consider the phrase "white nigger". How it might be offensive, or to whom, would depend on the setting.

All of my friends swear.

This would take all of my kdice friends away to kjail.

Grun would be sad.

=(

the ONLY way to stop the abusive behaviour here is to BAN THE PLAYER FOR LIFE

why make a rule that can be abused and mocked by everyone. seriously, what bunch of incompetent people would do that... oh the world, right got it.

but where do you draw the line on swearing, americans think bitch is fine to use, suddenly tv programs are beeping it out over here

what if i use words a 'mod' doesn't think is offensive but ONE other player does, other way around? what if i swear in french or japanese, no one may understand what it says but there you go, still it is swearing, i know lets just implant devices into peoples heads and when they are thinking a bad thought mods can zap them! shit yea!

this is a very slippery slope, one mistake and this place is gone.

Any insult is insulting. Their is no material difference whether the insult contains gutter language or is most eloquently phrased. I am sure that we all have insulted someone sometime, regardles of the method. So, if you wish to ban someone for life for being insulting, then all of us should be banned. Develop thicker skins, people and let Ryan and the mods work out how to do their job in a reasonable fashion.
