there´s still ONE unfair fact in the DOM-Point-system...

If we say that a good player should get more points then a less good player, I´ve got a problem with following situation:
You start a round, very screwed and with unlucky rolls in your first round. In round two there is just one territory with two dices... The whole game is very interesting, balanced powers... a longtime noone can say who will win this game - and no-one flaggs. You play well - the next rounds you´ve got just two terries, building up your stacks. You start to expand slowly. In the end there are 5-7 Territories you´ve got in your corner. And wow - after all players are executed, just you, a hugh first place and another player a bit bigger then you are rest... the two little players start fighting the big one. After the other player had some unlucky rolls and he is reduced to splitted 4 islands, you´re owning now 9 territories. No chance to win this game anymore against bout 20 territories. So you flag 2nd. And you earn 21 points for this 2nd place. After a long game where you gave your best...! I don´t know how to solve this unbalanced score-system. but perhaps you have... |

but rowdy has a good point as well, flags appear way too early most of the time, but i dont think decreasing dom-score will change that. |

at 9:21 AM, Wednesday May 21, 2008 EDT aixo, in part you have a point but I think it isn't as unfair as you make it sound.
first of all, 21 points would be for what table level? 500? At a 2500 table, my guess is you would end up with a bit more points. In the example you describe, let's say you made some bad moves and got the 7th you could have gotten as well. You still improved your result by 250-1000 points (depending what table level you were talking about). You didn't get huge winnings but the preventing of a huge loss is equally rewarding in my mind. Today I had my monthly "scramble for a few points" day (at least I hope this was the worst one for this month) here is a list of today (10 x at 2500 ): 6.102.266 jurgen mei 21, 8:14 AM CDT 2nd 33 % 52 : 48 54.2 % 15 7.177?? (?ª181) 95th 6.101.936 jurgen mei 21, 8:04 AM CDT 7th 17 % 40 : 60 46.5 % 3 6.996?? (?«345) 100th 6.100.428 jurgen mei 21, 7:14 AM CDT 3rd 22 % 59 : 41 47.8 % 14 7.341?? (?ª34) 89th 6.099.929 jurgen mei 21, 6:55 AM CDT 4th 17 % 54 : 46 45.6 % 11 7.307?? (?«279) 93rd 6.099.612 jurgen mei 21, 6:45 AM CDT 3rd 21 % 45 : 55 52.9 % 6 7.586?? (?«27) 87th 6.099.005 jurgen mei 21, 6:27 AM CDT 3rd 38 % 50 : 50 49.8 % 15 7.613?? (?ª735) 85th 6.098.168 jurgen mei 21, 6:00 AM CDT 2nd 50 % 63 : 37 49.3 % 26 6.878?? (?ª605) 105th 6.097.856 jurgen mei 21, 5:50 AM CDT 5th 20 % 47 : 53 50.9 % 5 6.273?? (?«233) 122nd 6.097.044 jurgen mei 21, 5:23 AM CDT 3rd 20 % 64 : 36 47.3 % 19 6.506?? (?«134) 115th 6.096.188 jurgen mei 21, 4:53 AM CDT 7th 16 % 42 : 58 51.2 % 4 6.640?? (?«423) 112th My last game was a +181 for 2nd similar to the example you described. The one before was a -345 for 7th , also at a 2500 table. Both games had bad starts and both games got me the best result possbile I think. Even though I didn't gain many points today and all games were tough, I was happy with the points because I knew I almost always pulled the maximum out of the situation. With your proposition to give more points for such efforts I would surely have gotten more points today. But remember, it will not only be you that will benefit from the other scoring system, every other good player will have to be rewarded too so in the end you might get more points but all your opponents will increase their scores by rougly the same number of points. |
