All that is if you didn't wanna use some FREE BBS software that would be a LOT more functional than what we have today.

Why would you want to edit a post?
[possible answers]
- To correct grammar, spelling and other language errors.
- Because you changed your mind about something you said.
- To make your post funnier.
- To make somebody else's answer look silly.
- ...

The devil's advocate tells me that the edit button would be a great tool to start false rumors and then erase the evidence.

Not losing the unedited version of the post could make things safer. This is obviously more work, but I think hiding the old message, as opposed to erasing it, would be better.

yeah, it would obv. be useful to have, in italics, "Edited on (month, day, time)" at the bottom of an edited post.

I think this is the most primitive forum in the history of the internet. even with the upgrades...
