OK, I was snooping around the test page, when i noticed a "Membership" link. It brought me to a page that had two large icons, one with a star, explaining the donation stars, and another with a large "m" on a blue ribbon pin-like object.
The M was for kdice membership, and it says this: "Becoming a member makes you part of the club. It shows your support for KDice and has the added bonus of giving you a better start each month. Instead of a starting slow, playing with many newer players, you start every month with 500â—†. The membership fee is low because I want everyone to be able to afford it. It is only US $2.50 a month! ($30 for the year). Oh, and it applies to both your KDice and GPokr accounts." First of all, I'm posting this as an informative post, but I think it would be great if we could discuss this, because I have some thoughts about it, and you might too. I am impartial. I'm not for it because I cannot pay anything since I have no means of paying for such membership, and I think that even though 500 is not a huge start in points, in my opinion, it's more than enough. I would gladly pay just 30$, but I'm not allowed to get a credit card yet, so I'm out. Also, I've stuck around for a while, and even though just being here doesn't mean shit to a tree, the label "member" might get to a couple of people's heads. On the positive side, this is a great incentive to get money to the site to improve it, and that means bigger and better things. |

at 10:13 PM, Saturday November 24, 2007 EST From a users perspective, I don't see this as a good thing at all. Every single web service I have been a part of that has created a paid service like this, has resulted in severe admin inactivity. They get their income, and then forget about the game entirely. We have no way of ensuring that the money received, would actually be spent on Kdice.
I'm also sceptical to any introduction of any system which gives users who pay additional benefits. Give them gold stars, ad-free pages, their own little message board and sand-pit, but don't give them any advantage. All it does is discourage the remaining playerbase because they can't compete, and they'll leave. Suddenly we’re playing Kdice with 10 people. It has happened. I’m sure that there’ll be a few low-life idiots, who will all become members, and just farm their way to the top, before most people even reach 500. This is a very cool game, but I’m not sure this is the right direction to head into. This is the web2.0 (Plus?) generation, and we can’t find a better way to monetize than a ribbon with an ‘M’ on it? What about a pay-to-play Kdice tournament or something? Are there really no other better ideas? I don’t think this will make any difference, and I’d like to read what others think of it, but I can’t see it being a good step for this game. |

at 11:23 PM, Saturday November 24, 2007 EST i like it too. i think it blends the pay-to-play tournament idea with the current monthlies -- so even if you can't pay you can compete in the competition. at the same time, you aren't bothered with the lesser players every month. ;)

silentcollision: I can understand your concern, but if you actually think about it, 500 pnts isnt that much for the regulars (not the elite/pros). Technically that is only 5 wins on a 10 table, or 2.5 on a 200 table. Based on that, I dont see that a 'member' is getting that much of advantage. If anything, its helping the lower tier players to gain points (adds pnts to the pool). I know that I can drop 500 pnts very easily over 2 hrs. (especially if i have had a couple of beers) |

at 11:07 AM, Sunday November 25, 2007 EST The main reason for going this way is to move away from donations/stars. They have been great and everyone's been very generous with helping out the site. It's let me dedicate the last few months to improving performance. However, I would like to improve the site more and have it grow and to do this i need to rely on more than just ad revenue. I think the membership option is a bit more compelling than a star and it also doesn't hinder non members from competing. (also, anyone who has bought a star before dec 1 will be a member for a year - hint hint)
I was going to go the route of having stars buy things on the site and actually started implementing this but it got fairly complicated and would probably be confusing. I believe, one simple membership option that is cheap, is the way to go. Keep letting me know your thoughts. I still have a week to get things going. |

at 12:58 PM, Sunday November 25, 2007 EST Is there ever going to be a cool member feature(s)? It could be something simple like voting for a map of the month or option to embed a video into profile. The current member feature list looks a bit bland :P

at 3:25 PM, Sunday November 25, 2007 EST can members:
1. vote on maps? 2. create maps? 3. have tables named after them? 4. have private member tables? also, how much is membership cost? will you have a one month, 6 months, 1 year option? how about a $50 for a lifetime membership? |
