wouldn't it be simplest just to make the new version and the old version available?

I'd love to hear the argument against this.

For a somewhat more serious reply, two code bases means twice the work for Ryan. Any exploit in either code base would need to be fixed. Both user communities would be asking for enhancements all the time.

Twice the work, for no more revenue, because roughly the same number of people would be playing. In fact I'd argue less people would play, because two smaller communities I think would not grow as fast as one integrated community. Larger networks grow faster than small ones.

I actually don't think that kdice has required very many changes in the past 6 months. Perhaps Ryan would disagree, but certainly offering the old version and saying "i'm never going to modify this, ever again, play at your own risk" seems better than just not offering it.

It really is kindof sad to think that this game that everyone played and loved for 6 months, right now does not exist, and in its place is this vaguely recognizable other game that has its own merits. I can't really think of another instance of this phenomenon -- you almost always have access to "the old version" when it comes to games, software, etc..

LOL ok so since so many peeps completely dislike this version, I have made up my mind to host the idea myself. I've emailed Ryan myself and he hasn't responded (and don't expect him to) because either he hates the idea of a community (lack of proper forums tells you for one (not features, just a functional forum where topics don't disappear/override)) or he's so pissed of that users don't see kdice as the great game it used to be (but just another version of gpokr with dice for cards?!).

"Well, it would splinter the community in half, and be confusing to new players as to which one to play." They would play the one they like - very obvious.

"Step away from the computer, it is a magical box that gets to decide what is possible" = Thank you tommen, I couldn't have said it better.

==> In the end, there is a very simple solution to this. There is absolutely no need to create 2 databases, 2 separate servers, or anything that involves offering "kdice" in the varying systems.
It's much more effective to allow the calculations for Elo run behind the current system. The result: on the lower left screen and next to your username at top you see your Diamonds & pokr-based rank as well as Elo & Elo based rank (this can be modified to just appear in profile page if it's too much info in the screen but you get the gist).

I'd like to point out that it's better to keep the forums a place where we can evaluate our opinions rather than flame at the first person who speaks against the new system - the creator always defends his cause, it's makes you fucking human, but you're also human because you listen to others' opinions.

[took me ~6 mins to write that if one wonders, and i feel like i need to drink water] later mates

I am a little confused about your idea of having the ELO scores included with the new scoring system. The game play has changed, and having some people play to the new style and others to the old in the same game sounds like a headache to me. As far as I can tell this is a very active user community with Ryan chiming in a lot, not to mention fixing/updating the code and running the servers. Now I know some people must have had lag issues in the past and they are not going to get better by dividing the server resources between multiple mods of the game. Anyway when trying to prevent flaming it may be a good idea to not swear or be disrespectful to the the guy running the whole show. Bye the way how much have you donated to the cause copyright?

Guys, its much easier to be constructive that to be so negative about things. I tend to ignore people who are overly negative. The original question by Tommen is a good one and one that I'll answer. As for all the other negative stuff here, I'm not going to respond.

Q: Wouldn't it be simplest just to make the new version and the old version available?

A:

I think the best way to explain this is to compare this to other games. Take chess for example. There are many variations of the game that other people prefer for various reasons. However, for the game to work in a broad way there needs to be a single standard. When you learn chess you learn one way. Kdice is a new game and not perfect yet. It's going through the process of being refined to find the best game. Kdice should have a single way to play so that it can grow. As Sinth says two different versions would split the community in half and confusing to new players as to which one to join.

Also compare to poker which took a long time to get popular appeal. And it was texas holdem that did it. There were too many variations of poker for the majority to decide on a single one. But now its finally popular and you can see the positive effects of most people knowing a single way to play poker.

You should also know the last time Kdice changed was to add dominance points. There was a much bigger uproar about this type of points. The reason was because poeple had become familiar with a certain strategy which no longer worked and therefore made the game seem less fun. But now, nobody wants to go back to when there was no dominance. The gameplay was too poor. I think you will find the same thing with this version. It cleans up both the scoring (ELO and score was fairly complicated) and the gameplay. In the long run you should find this a more well rounded game. I believe you will even like it better if you give yourself time to learn the best strategies.

sit n go gpokr is a perfect example. There were many requests for sit n go. I did it. But there's not enough people focused on it to make it any value. It makes more sense to focus on the regular poker in this case.
