I think I first saw Angel Heart when I was eleven years old, and at the time I didn't notice quite how long it was. There's something rather appealingly juvenile about the concept and presentation, and something much deeper which stuck with me. It wasn't just the slightly obvious realisation toward the end, it was a more savage and visceral quality I could never quite identify. I've often wondered how such a profundity is possibly, when the logic is elementary, the epistemology is insane and the pace is wheezy at best; the performances from the actors alternate, I now realise, between parody and obsessive intensity, but not in time with the metre of the plot; the script is malformed, and probably the product of committee thinking. The package is not good. Yet that intangible something was always there, wearing at me, boiling in the back room of my mind like a sacrificial cauldron, even after the sad chickenblood splatters of the principle scene had faded and all but two or three of the character's name had atrophied from lack of use. It came back to me, eventually. The elevator interstitials under the closing credits. Overly long, maybe; passed over by the majority of viewers, certainly; a gem, definitely. That was balls-to-the-wall film making, the likes of which we so rarely see today. It was as if the whole, lumbering mess was designed to culminate in those terminal moments -- much like Harry Angel's epiphany its- (or rather her)self. The whole thing stuck with me because I realised then, at that young age, that I had learned something incredible: films are more than a series of moments. I have no idea which colour Louis Cypher played or what his conduct was like during the game, but I give him four stars out of five: more than he deserves integrally, but with a bonus for the profound lesson he has delivered holistically.

Quite a moron that leaves angry reviews when losing to a truce. He had flagged his partner and thus he got last. All fair and square - unless you are a major noob
