at 9:34 AM, Friday July 18, 2014 EDT Bitcoin is a novel form of electronic money based on peer-to-peer technology. It's main strength for some is that the government has absolutely no control over the value or the transactions, so it might be used for any purpose (even illicit drug trade). On the other hand, the exchange rate (bitcoin/$) might be quite volatile (no central banks - nothing to safeguard the value) so a lot of websites refrain from accepting it.

at 10:26 AM, Friday July 18, 2014 EDT essentially there's only two ways to pay for things online - credit cards and paypal. online transactions increase greatly every year, and these mega-monopolies get a cut of each transaction. bitcoin is one method of making online payments that isn't owned by some government or corporation. And it just so happens that I got a boatload of 'em.
