so like, Ryan has some code or script or whatever it's called that makes KDice work...it was fine for the last however many days/weeks/months, but then yesterday it broke (both the game and the forum)....Ryan came on pretty soon thereafter and was able to fix the game, but the forum remains broken.
my question is, how does the game/forum break? if it's already coded and working, wouldn't something somehow have to change in the code for it to all a sudden break? did ryan's cat step on his keyboard or something? or can scripts just stop working out of nowhere without anything being touched? now that i look thru this thread, there's plenty more than just one question |

at 11:39 PM, Tuesday October 4, 2011 EDT There's a few ways this can happen without him making a change. Here's the top two; others I can think of happen very very rarely.
#1 - Something maxed out: space on the file system, space allocated to his database, etc.. So calls in the code base or queries that used to work just fine being to fail. #2 - Something external: he could be relying on javascript hosted elsewhere or making other external service calls. The third party changes their API or has issues of its own, and code or service calls that used to work just fine begin to fail. There are other edge cases, but the two above are the two most likely things I can think of. I would guess it's number 1, as I doubt he's calling out to anything external that would fail in the fashion we're seeing. |

"Maxing out" could also just be a counter, like the number of posts or games (that's more like a detail, nothing new). Most frequent external influences is updated libraries. These could even be introduced through auto-update and sometimes the hardly documented, unintentional "feature" you've been abusing is gone... Fixing that is tough I would expect. |
