Thoughts on Flagging/Dom

After having an arguement with cool g about flagging, I read Vermont's post on "common misconceptions about the current flagging system". I encourage everyone to read it: http://kdice.com/blog/48.

Although the idea for flagging was to just make games end faster, they have definately evolved into more than just that, they have become a way for players to secure a position without having to take everyone on the board out. How fun would it be if, once a player got a considerable lead, then proceeded in just wiping the entire board, regardless flags. This leads me to my disagreement with Vermont's post.

Vermont encourages dom farming in his post "They may want to earn more dom points - it is their right to do so as they have clearly earned a stronger position". this brings me back to my arguement with cool g. I was playing a game with him where everyone else on the board had flagged to him, I then flagged to him, clearly being in 2nd place. Although he acknowledged the flag, he wouldn't accept it, because he wanted more dom points. He then proceeded to take me from 2nd to 7th, just to get himself another 50 points. I hadn't been an ass to him at all, and it wasn't a ninja flag, I had full 8 stacks covering my base. When playing him in future I of course had a grudge, and how couldn't I? I encourage players to be more "honorable", and not to ruin all 6 other player's game, just so that you can get a few more points. I was surprised to see Vermont encouraging such play.

Another thing I would like to touch on is Dom points. Although there are some benefits to them, I think the cons are greater. Practically the only benefit imo to Dom is that it discourages just stacking in a corner all game, but it encourages extremely aggressive play. for example, if your very aggressive on a 5000 table, like overextending in round 1, if you keep on being aggressive for several rounds, you can flag out and only lose like 500 points. This makes the strategy for playing on 0-100 tables completely different than higher level tables. Apart from that, it encourages the player in first place to be an ass hole, like I stated above.

I'm expecting to get a lot of rage from people on this post, but I just had to get this off my chest.

I will contest your 2nd point, that trying to increase dom is a negative EV play. A low dom win is worth around 500 points or so, while a high dom win is around 750. Now this will be a hyperbolic example, but let's suppose we have two players; one who farms for the 750, and one who sits for the 500. After 200 games with a 25% win rate, the farming player will earn over 12000 points more in the month(don't argue the exact numbers, you can increase games and decrease win rate slightly, but this is fairly typical of top players).
This should show how valuable farming is. 12000 extra points, and this example only takes into account 500 table play, and doesn't add in the extra dom points gained in 2nd-7th.
(If enough people want, I could make a fairly simple chart showing hypothetical players with different playing styles, and the points they would earn in a month.)
Anyway, it is not hard to see that an aggressive player that farms, can easily earn and extra 20,000+ points in a month. One can see that this 20k added to the base points essentially guarantees a blue medal.
There is no way this can be offset by pissing some people off along the way, especially if it's done tactfully, which is possible if the farmer is friendly and warns players in advance that he will take all greys, islands, and a few other weak lands in advance. Most people don't care, or at least understand when they are told upfront what is going to happen and it doesn't come as a surprise(If they don't, then it is fairly likely you will not see them enough for their PGEs to affect you much).
Sparta, I am not advocating what cool g did to you, since I was not there to see it, but your thesis on the downsides of farming is patently and utterly incorrect.
Thank you.

You push a good point, but I just hope that players are good sports enough to not ruin everyone's game to get more dom. Taking islands and neutrals will not ruin the players games, but advances your dom without making yourself an ass.

personally i use a simple trick to avoid being a total ass and only become a minor ass: decline the 1st flagger flag and respect others flags (unless u know that this player will be a good aid/slave, and will not just flag everyone else too). even better when u can 1 hit him instead of slowly feeding on his lands.

and so u are not farming, and u have a desirable amount of lands. u scare everyone else with the 1 hit. u just pissed off one person who is dead. there is less gruge when u kill someone other than when u farm someone, because farming messes his fight (which ppl have high hopes for).

and why kill him after his flag:
1) flags sucks,
2) games where ppl just build and don't fight sucks,
3) having a large amount of lands is cool.

Farming=keep planting seeds until one grows into a plant, then you fuck the plant.
