"The purpose of government is not financial well being of its citizens, but in maintaining order."

The statement regarding the government being more responsible in maintaining order instead of focusing on financial well being is a very sound opinion. There are several reasons why the government should be more concerned with maintaining order over just the financial well being of its people. The government as a whole should function to improve and maintain society, free trade should dictate finance rather than government, and the safety and order of all the people is much more important the citizens financial well-being.

I agree with the statement for a few reason, firstly, the less the government is involved in the individual financial decisions of its citizens the better. The government should concern itself less with finances and more with creating programs that can better the moral grounds of a society and therefore, maintain order in that society. Without order, and moral compass, there would be no finances to manage in a society. By focusing on social programs that would benefit the society as a whole, the government can maintain the best order and efficiency possible. The purpose of government is to be elected by the people to support their ideas and defend them publicly. The best way to do this is to focus on government programs that maintain order.

Secondly, the government should focus on politics and let free trade markets dictate the direction of the financial markets. The government is not elected to monitor free trade, but rather to monitor and maintain order in the society. In a democratic society governments responsibility lies in protecting the ideals of its constituents and not in determining how their finances be diverted. It would be best if the government never used or abused its authority by overextending its boundaries to influence finance. The recent government programs that have been used in the United States to rescue failing businesses has shown to be a failure on the part of the government. The government cannot pick and choose who to rescue financially and who to let flounder and fail. Instead, the government's purpose is to maintain political order and let free markets correct themselves.

Thirdly, the governments chief responsibility is maintaining the safety and interests of its people. Although, sometimes this may include using some financial reforms, I do not think that the financial reforms are the main responsibility of the government. The government should be much more concerned with funding a military to protect it's people and to create a social structure that maintains order. By properly funding a military the government is maintaining order. In my opinion funding the Department of Defense in the United States is a very effective and intelligent way to maintain order in our society. These should be the governments main responsibilities, safety and order.

Although the government may be responsible for some financial securities of the people, the main function should definitely be maintaining order amongst its people. The government can do this by creating programs that give its people sound moral compasses, allowing free markets to correct themselves rather than meddle in the markets, and funding programs that maintain order of the citizens such as the Department of Defense. By combining all of these government programs the government can accurately and effectively maintain order, which is its chief responsibility.

THAT WAS MY RESPONSE TO AN OPINION QUESTION ON THE GMAT LOL

"It would be best if the government never used or abused its authority by overextending its boundaries to influence finance."

Here comes another Great Depression.

I can hardly agree with anything you say too, wish. Not only you promote the wildest part of capitalism when government doesn't do shit even when some sort of monopoly/oligopoly forms and the nation is getting ripped off big time, but you also advise dumping more money into the military and "order" (that sounds dang close to propaganda).

Sounds like a militaristic African country where a dictator controls the country with the help of 200+ AK armed soldiers and some propaganda to boot. Heck, even free market is possible there -as long as the big man gets his cut, he could care less about his nation.

You make some good points in your opinion.

However, I have problem with the right wing talking point of "don't meddle in the markets". The issue is that by "not meddling", a government is actually being asked to "get rid of most oversight and controls". And the lack of oversight is what has caused numerous financial collapses and permitted corrupt monopolistic conglomerates to grow.

The elimination of oversight is what all corporations strive for so that their version of "free trade" will work. Those same folks scream that anything that is not privatized is socialism.

When profits are made by these corporations in the US, the profits are naturally privatized. (And I agree that they should be) Ironically, when these corporation suffer big losses, they seek government bailouts. So that their losses may be socialized! They never would dare use the word socialized when they take government money.

In other words, some of the most greedy bastards on the planet scream socialism when money helps individuals. But when AIG needs a fucking bailout, it's okay to rape the US tax payer to make up for losses to pay for board member and directors bonuses.

Make no mistake, this is not a left/right issue. This is an American citizen vs. the top 1% corpotacracy issue.

What is going on in Wisconsin today is a sign of things to come. The Koch brothers and others like them will no longer be able to manipulate the masses.

In Wisconsin, citizens of the United States of America. Left and Right have joined forces in an effort to recall the corrupt governing bodies who are slime puppets for people like the Koch brothers.

Some elements of "order" are financial. Examples, money and contract law. When people buy and sell in markets, they are operating according to standards that are set by government. For example, a promise to deliver "100 metric tons of #4 hard wheat F.O.B" has to have the same meaning to buyer and seller. These standards are established by government or are established by conventions that are enforceable by government. Money is traditionally issued by govermnent but even if it is privately issued, its value is defined by standards that ultimately have to be enforced by government.
