BLUNTMAYNE420'S Review of KDice Trainer

Firstly, I have to say that gameplay was buggy and glitched out on me a lot.
If Ryan is wondering, that's probably not the only reason the game isn't popular. I have spoken to a few people about the app, and basically here's what I've surmised: 1) The app does not appeal to a broad audience like KDice or Dice Wars does. Basically, you can only appreciate this app if you're familiar with KDice, which really narrows your consumer base. The game definitely needs to be dumbed down and simplified. You might want to consider adding a starting tutorial or something. A wall of Q&A text labeled 'HELP' is not the greatest enticement for a prospective consumer. Not to mention the iPhone reviews are so poor that the only people who have downloaded this app are from the KDice community. 2) The game is awkward and glitchy. I understand this will be fixed with time, but it's only one of many problems that plague this app. The app alienates people who have never played dicewars, and even people who are familiar with KDice are somewhat confused by the interface. The missing in-game stats on each player make it difficult to size enemies up, and the way flagging works for bots is very confusing. I will try to only touch on the poor AI, which seems to be the greatest point of discontent for many. The AI shows absolutely no discretion in who or how it attacks. This makes it difficult to not only strategize but also stage a comeback or flag. IMO the flagging system needs to go all together, or at least a serious revision. 3) The "climb to the top" aspect of the game is just nonsensical and needs to be dropped. People don't enjoy KDice because of the ladder, in fact many players avoid the top 100 all together. They enjoy KDice because of it's strategic depth, which doesn't seem to be fostered in this app. IMO a straight port of Taro Ito's dicewars would quickly have been a more successful app. KDice Trainer has had a rocky start and faces some serious challenges. But it shows some serious potential, and that's without even considering online play. My one suggestion that I hope Ryan takes earnestly would be to change the pseudo-random generator to something a little less random, like in dicewars. As this would definitely make the game more popular amongst novices. Of course I also endorse that change in KDice, but it makes more sense for this app. Bottom line: This app is okay for a first try, but it needs a lot of work if it's expected to gain popularity outside of the KDice community. And don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed the app - and I know a good dicewars app would be very successful on the iPhone, but this just isn't it. Of course, what do I know - I was probably high when I wrote this. |

"Fix it" is NOT a solution. |

at 5:15 AM, Sunday May 10, 2009 EDT @wulf, blunt has put some valid points across and, from what i have read and understood of his post, has put potentilal solutions to the problems HE finds...whether ryan implements any changes or even reads this post is well...another matter.
the kdice trainer was the first app i bought for my iphone, i got it for next to nothing cos of some sale or shit. $0.99 i think i paid for it and it has been easily the best $0.99 ive spent in a long while as far as value for money is concerned. i must say, i agree with blunt in some aspects of his post, not all but some. firstly, the flagging SUCKS! it sucks on kdice.com and it sucks on the trainer. personally, i wud change the flagging to flag and ur dead. since dom doesnt seem to play a major part in the trainer and im pretty sure , when i say there is no PGA lol, this flagging system wud by far work the best. secondly the bots are retarded, going for epic connections that leave them wide open for raping and they never roll -1. u know when the match winning 5v6 crops up...ZIP! they seem to only +1 which gets rather predictable 100% of the time. thirdly, the leaderboard, i think this this is a great asset as it gives the player who wants to be the best, something to aim at. for those that just wana play, then the leaderboard has no relevance so both target markets are happy. overall, i'd say well worth the buy but needs tweaking and marketed. i think blunt is bang on about the kdice community buying the app...need to mnarket this more somehow awe |

at 11:32 AM, Sunday May 10, 2009 EDT One more thing: the random map generator is REALLY bad. Maps that are closer to interconnected rectangles are much more fun to play than maps that are split in half an isthmus chokepoint. Same goes for peninsula maps that just consist of a weird looking straight line, the entire map is a chokepoint.
Of course, I'm sure the map generator does what was intended of it - making random maps. But there's a lesson in its universal disapproval, random isn't necessarily good. Take a page, I mean another page, out of Taro Ito's dicewars. |
