Better Restack Option

Please vote for the following idea in "Ideas" if you think it would be good!
We've all had painful experiences with bad restacks. One of the worst can be when you connect a number of territories, ussually at the beginning of a game, only to have your dice restack on the one distant outlying territory that you didn't connect. More often than not this allows your opponents to cut you more easily and you end up, at worst with nothing, and, at best, with an ill-favored attempt to start something new from the lonely territory where your dice restacked. I understand, however, that kDice has been dedicated to not being like risk when it comes to having the choice of where to place armies. This is clearly motivated by the time factor of how long this would take, and possibly by a determination that, at least in kDice, that element of the game should be random, and equally random for everybody. Therefore, I am not proposing that we get to choose where to restack. However, I think a good middle ground between the current rules and 'risk' type rules, would be an option to have your dice restack only on the territories that form your biggest connection on the map (selected randomly if you have, for example, two connections of 4). Therefore, if you had this option selected (via a check box by your name) when you make a connection 5 at the beginning, whilst leaving one unconnected territory, all five of your dice would be guarenteed to be spread across only the connected territories. This still doesn't take it to the extreme of deciding exactly which individual territories will get dice (so you can still get screwed) but it at least allows you to make a choice about what you want to connect and what you want to sacrifice, and not get screwed over by a wacky restack. I can't imagine that this option wouldn't do more good than harm in all almost every circumstance. I also doesn't take any extra time, and also respects the spirit of randomness by and large in that aspect of the game. It would be important to have it as a checkbox option, and not automatic rule, just because of times later in the game when you might get cut and would still like to have dice re-stack on the territories that have been momentarily cut from your main body of territories. Obviously, I think this option would help out mostly at the beginning of the game when you are still trying to connect and get yourself some consolidated territory. What do you guys think? Good idea, or is it just the same in the long run to leave it completely random? |
