Attacking Blank Territories - End Game Strategy

I often see players attacking blank territories when not nessisary.

Lets say that Players placed Third and Fourth Flag out of the game leaving Players in First and Second place left with a host of blank territories and a close game. I often see the player in Second immediatly start attacking blank spots in an effort to increase Seconds own territory size.

Often they are defeated and lose valuable restack die. While the First place player goes directly on the attack against second.

I dont think I have ever seen that strategy work. I think it is in the best interest of the second placed player to attack First directly.

Any thoughts? Has anyone seen the Blank Attack work in a close game?

Yes, I completely agree with you.

I mean, by taking over a blank territory you gain one territory against the other guy, while by winning over one of his territories you are gaining one territory and he is losing one...
So its absolute common sense to first go after him.

Ofcourse, it all depends whether you can attack him on many territories. Like if I have a big pile of restack dice and can only attack on two or three territories, I still prefer to also go after some blanks as that pays of in long term. Restack pile wont last forever, and once you are out of it its the number of territories you got that counts...

thats my 2c...

Obviously, unless there are 5 or less dice on the greys, its free land. But attacking 7's and 8's is silly when you have the 2nd place player to contend with. Sometimes I start attacking the grey 8's when I feel that I have a definite win because if I keep concentrating on knocking down the 2nd place player he loses more hope and will flag sooner. The longer I can make him/her stay in the game, the more dom points to be had.

a) n00bs attack gray in the end game.
b) Sometimes attacking gray makes sense anyway because of the goddamn scoring system.

I don't know...

I haven't watched enough games to know if it'd work, but does it make sense to attack all the grey lands in the back of you, even leaving you short stacked in an effort to expand really quickly? As long as your front two lines are intact, the opponent shouldn't get a good cut on you, and you have a better chance of growing faster without any major repercussions. Just a thought
