Blackberry folks, help me out

So I'm really looking for getting a Blackberry. However, I don't really need the whole data package, and since I'm a poor college student, it's a hit on my wallet. Therefore, I was wondering if anyone knew a way that I could use a Blackberry on the Verizon network without paying for data fees, $29.99 being the cheapest BB plan in addition to my regular plan.

My plan right now is to upgrade to the basic BB plan, get the phone (BB 88830 for the GSM/CDMA), activate the phone (Verizon requirements), re-activate my old phone, remove myself from the data plan, block all data access from my plan(My Razr is hacked and has free internet, so I could always use that for stuff), then reactivate the Blackberry, and everything should work?

I've been hearing that companies will auto-enroll you in the data plan if you use the BB without a data plan, but if I've blocked all Data, there's no way for the RIM network to determine that I'm using a BB right?

Please advise.

Well verizon wireless activates phones based on serial numbers(OTA). Blackberries all use a serial number starting in BB(also known as pin) which requires verizon to activate the data plan. The system wont let u activate a blackberry serial number without a data plan soc code. As far as i know unless u know someone who works for verizon corporate(not on a retail level) its impossible
