Flag - definitive answer pls

Ok, so someone says flag means surrender, so no one can attack the flagged player.

Someone else says flag means you won't attack those above you, so they then leave you alone.

Someone else says flags mean nothing and everyone just attacks you anyway

Someone else says, person in first gets to decide who deserves flags, when two players flag the same position.

Some say you have to flag in a chat box or it doesn't count.

Most newbies don't even know flags exist.

These are all the explanations I've heard in the few days I've been playing.

So is there an actual definition of what flagging means??????

Because if everyone around the table thinks it means something different, it becomes impossible to use as a strategy, so whats the point?

Wouldn't it be better to arrange alliances etc. through chat?

If you mean through the chat box in the game, people do that, but be aware that if you ally with someone, the rest of the table might counter truce against you. If you mean secret ones taht you form using another chat program, people will get all cranky.

As for flags, there will never be a definitive answer. I use it to mean different things depending on the game and who I playing with. Sometimes it helps to state your purpose when you flag.

Like Chamberlain said, flags can mean different things at different times. Either way, if you are in 1st place, then take another player's flag any way you want. There is no true set definition for a flag, but the most accepted one is that you will not attack first if flagged.

"Someone else says flags mean nothing and everyone just attacks you anyway" <-- This. Especially if I've pretty much got a lock on first place before 8 stacks, and 3rd place does some kind of mecha attack on me trying to get enough territories to claim 2nd by being reckless. Oh man someone tried this yesterday and I was pretty much straight up with the "You are going to die, your flag is not an invincibility shield, you have MY fuckin territories"

The question mark he put into chat was hilarious as i bulldozed him down to last place.

Tia, theres just ONE correct answer:
If you flag 7th, youre out... (and so on)

Ok, so someone says flag means surrender, so no one can attack the flagged player.
>>> why not?

Someone else says flag means you won't attack those above you, so they then leave you alone.
>>> mostly, (***)but pirate / ninja-flags wont be accepted, or if you have pissed off a player above you

Someone else says flags mean nothing and everyone just attacks you anyway
>>> see (***)

Someone else says, person in first gets to decide who deserves flags, when two players flag the same position.
>>> either you let them fight, good for farming, or you kill the person who gonna lose the fight, OR you gonna give it to the person you have to thank for your own position?

Some say you have to flag in a chat box or it doesn't count.
>>> sometimes you dont see the flag - better be sure to tell it too. but never heard of that.

Most newbies don't even know flags exist.
>>> so true, but the most of them dont flag early enough.

These are all the explanations I've heard in the few days I've been playing.
>>> 5k ppl, 10k explanations ^^

So is there an actual definition of what flagging means??????
>>> look at the top: when you flag 7th (or last place) youre out - thats for sure.

Wouldn't it be better to arrange alliances etc. through chat?
>>> how else you gonna arrange an alliance?

hope i could help ya... have a nice day.

Thanks for the answers guys!

Its a pity flags can't be used in a more meaningful way, perhaps they are more useful on the higher tables?

Silly me, just found this in the FAQ:

What is flagging?

If you are not currently winning a game, you will have the option to 'flag' to the players above you. You do so by clicking the flag in the lower right hand corner:

What this means is that you will automatically drop out of the game when there are only as many people left alive as the spot you flagged for. For example, if you flagged for third and only three players remain, you automatically drop out.

Flagging does not prevent you from attacking or from stronger players attacking you. It only signifies that you cannot finish higher than the position you flagged for. Often times, but not always, this will mean a stronger player may leave you alone to attack a non-flagged player

Heres my idea of flagging

When you flag you should state who you are flagging to. Say i flag third to brown and purple, I am telling them i do not wish to compete for their spot and in turn they shouldnt attack me unless i attack them. Although you may get attacked by brown and purple if they beleive your flag is ridiculous and you dont deserve 3rd.

When two players are flagged for the same position they are usually allowed to fight it out if they are connected. If not then first will decide who gets what position.

It is also good to say in the chat box what you are flagging and to who so everyone sees it and knows what you're intentions are.

I think flagging ettiquette is more prevalent at the higher tables as the players play with each other more
