Dominance

Instead of calculating dominance by the number of territories, why not calculate it based on number of dice out of the total possible? For example:
Number of dice you have / (number of territories on the map * 8) This would implicitly account for having more territories (more connected territories the more dice you get at the end of your turn), but it would also more accurately reflect true dominance in the following situation: Who is more dominant? A player with 5 territories with one die on each or a player who has one territory stacked with 8 dice? I think I can rest my case with that example there, but I’d like to make one more point: Dominance could then be a fixed number equal to the total number of dice possible on the map instead of points put in each round. This would allow for players to fight for better position instead of having to flag for fear of losing points by staying in the game. Points could be distributed like this: Average of ((number of dice the player has at the end of each round / total possible) * 100) When a player flags out he takes the points he’s earned out of the pool and is gone. A simple: if points earned > points left in pool then points earned = points left in pool. Coding wise, points would have to be distributed from the bottom up with the leader getting what is left over (which would still be more than anyone else got). This idea would smooth the points earned per game such that longer games would not mean more points, thus leading to quicker end games. Farming would be completely impossible with a fixed number of points per game. With a fixed amount of placement points per game and a fixed amount of dom points per game, this would solve a lot of the issues we complain about with respect to farming and flagging and strikes a good game balance for risk/reward. It also solves the silliness of people suiciding for dom before they flag. Thoughts? |

And how does it solve suiciding? I don't see the math in there (though it certainly could just be me, as I suck at math). |

In the endgame, if there you are in the leading position and 2 others are left, who flagged for second. There are two options: - to let them fight it out, not interfering anymore AND losing dom-points, especially when their fight takes a long time (on higher tables you got to pass on some points for your fairness) - or to be an asshole, taking some areas from the others and confusing their game. I think in this situation the dom-points of the leader should be frozen... |

If your dom is based on number of dice and you spread your dice out, then you still have the same number of dice. Thus suiciding does nothing. This works if dom is calculated at the beginning of the player's turn, which I've always thought it should be... After all, did you really hold those territories if you can't keep them 'til your next turn? Desh, The leader's points would certainly be effectively frozen in your case with this system. The average might go up ever so slightly but overall it wouldn't be significant. And that's a great point with respect to letting the two 2nd place players fight it out. This system would allow for that a lot more without penalizing the 1st place player at all (or rewarding them for it). |

I m not sure if that solves the problem. Everybody with full restack would have the same dom regardless of his size. I think the intension to make it more fair is good; but you have to try it another way. |

at 3:54 PM, Wednesday June 18, 2008 EDT desh, reserve dice would count until the 32 limit is reached. After that the only advantage would be to slightly bring your average up, but otherwise, just sitting there hitting End Turn would do no good.
I view that as a good thing though. :) |
